Near-complete Construction

By May 2008, construction was nearly complete! This video demonstrates our progress.

The very front of the booth houses the computer, speakers, camera, monitor and monitor frame, and an emergency keyboard and mouse.

The second computer in this shot was due to a transition from our original machine to one that was more powerful.

To ensure the booth could be disassembled we wanted to make it easy to remove the frame that holds the monitor. A clever use of brackets did the trick:

Notice on the right-side picture how the screw secures the bracket to the side wall? I was afraid that the screw's head height might prevent us from easily lifting and removing the monitor frame. If the screw locked the frame into the bracket, we would either have to sand-down or bore a hole in the frame, which would have added jiggle to the monitor frame. Fortunately, there's just enough wiggle room to lift the monitor right out.

Here's Nick demonstrating the ease with which we can remove the frame:

The roof has been built in sections. The middle section can be removed, and can also have struts put in place to create a small vent. Below we see the roof with the middle section removed, yet you can see where the velcro has been added. Either the middle section, or the struts can be placed there.

Finally, here is a video of our progress a week later, on May 11. As Alan says in the video, "We're not done, but we're damn close."

Did you notice the sound of a car coming down the driveway? By now we were so good at lying about the booth, that when people asked stuff like "What are you building there?" I'd say "What where?" until they got bored and walked away.
