Human beings have been enjoying wine for thousands of years.
Almost from the dawn of human civilization, people have been producing alcoholic beverages by fermenting juice from fruits. Merriam Webster defines wine as "the alcoholic fermented juice of fresh grapes used as a beverage." The word 'wine' is derived in English from the Old High German 'win' (pronounced wIn), which itself stems from the Latin 'vinum.'
The Charleston Bacchus Society was founded in 1992 and has conducted tastings among the membership bi-monthly.
Our tastings consist of a structured comparative tasting on a defined theme. Our method of scoring consists of each taster ranking the wines in order of his preference. Therefore his favorite wine is awarded 1 point, the second favorite 2 points, the third favorite 3 points etc. The rankings of all tasters are totaled. The " group favorite " wine is the wine with the fewest points. We call these "points against" - so the favorite wine has the fewest points against. An example, our tasting of a vertical of Chateau Cheval Blanc, is now posted on the site. Other past tastings are being added. Individual member's opinions and scores are available in the members section of the website.
