Looking around, you’d think that the world is well past its prime, shall we say.
The oceans are rising, the country’s in two, and it’s going downhill by the day.
We’re stuck in reverse
here in our metaverse.
But when it’s November, I always remember that things aren’t as bad as they seem;
for here comes the holiday you know I treasure and hold in the highest esteem.
Though some things don’t work, we
can all still eat turkey.
This year-and-three-quarters have certainly taught us to value the good in our lives.
And here’s living proof that I’m long in the tooth: You’re reading from poem 25!
Neither ancient nor little,
I give thanks in the middle.
Thanks in the middle of what, you might ask. Dissension and static and rage?
Those things might not quit, but I have to admit that the middle I mean is my age.
Seems that fifty-one means
more than three seventeens.
But don’t get me wrong—my blessings are many, and I’m surely not here to complain.
I’m wholly decided to stay quite delighted, despite just a few aches and pains.
And one thing that’s nice is
this isn’t a crisis.
No, the middle is cozy, a place to get used to, not worry and wonder and fret.
My notion of thriving does not include driving around town in a new red Corvette.
Though I s’pose I would bless ya
if you loaned me your Tesla.
And if you’re like me—a boomer or X-er, you could be a little bit quizzical;
I’m knocking on wood, but I’d say that it’s good we can still pass our annual physical.
Though it’s true every year
there are more things to fear.
Our parents are aging, with maladies raging; we’re hopeful that they can stay strong.
But my kids have emerged from the hormonal surge that made them ignore me so long.
And I’m partnered for life
with my wonderful wife.
So here is the point that I’m making this time, the theme which I’m trying to touch:
If you asked me what changes I’d make to this moment, I’d answer quite truly, not much.
When you get to this part,
know you’re dear to my heart.
Now load up your plates with a bountiful feast, as you gather with family and friends.
And from here in the middle, I send more than a little of my love to you all on both ends.
Enjoy all the living
until next Thanksgiving!
