Professor John Thanassoulis
John is the Professor of Financial Economics at Warwick Business School (WBS), University Of Warwick. He is the Associate Dean for the Bank of England Partnership and a CEPR Research Fellow. John’s research explores the effects of competition on ethical behaviour, on remuneration, and on price implications for firms and consumers.
John is a member of the UK Civil Aviation Authority Expert Panel advising on the appropriate regulatory model for airlines and airport expansion.
John served a full term as an Independent Panel Member for the UK Competition and Markets Authority. The panel members of the CMA determine the outcome of Phase 2 merger investigations. John was part of the Panel decision making team for a number of high profile merger cases, including Sainsbury's/Asda (groceries - blocked), Illumina/Pacific Biosciences (DNA sequencing - blocked), FNZ/GBST (Investment Management for Retail Clients), Virgin O2 (mobile telephony, 5G, pay TV), the London Stock Exchange Group/Quantile (post trade services), and the acquisition by Microsoft of Activision Blizzard King (gaming - blocked at first attempt).
Previously John has served on the Board of Oxford Investment Partners (OXIP). Before his chair at the University of Warwick, John was an Associate Professor at the University of Oxford, Department of Economics, and the Heyman-Moritz Fellow at Christ Church. John was educated at both Oxford and Cambridge, studying Mathematics followed by Economics.
John is also Treasurer of the Blackfriars Overseas Aid Trust (charity number 288585).
