When entering student scores with the Universal Passport system, you’ll typically enter a number (0–100), but there are some special codes you may need to use.
900
Did not take a (final) test or submit a paper/project/presentation that was required to pass the course.
This is not related to attendance and does not refer to regular homework. It refers to a test/paper/project/ presentation that is required to pass the course, regardless of other attendance or coursework.
This would also apply to a student who has taken a leave of absence (休学).
910
Insufficient attendance. Student has failed to meet your minimum attendance requirements.
The general standard is that students must attend at least 2/3 of class meetings. However (especially in language courses) your attendance requirement may be more strict. Be sure students are informed of your policy at course start. (Occasionally, an instructor may pass a student with less than “minimum” attendance under special conditions. This is arranged at the discretion of the instructor.)
920
Holding grade (incomplete).
You are waiting for the student to take a test, submit homework, complete a project, etc. to fulfill requirements for the course. When the student completes the work, you submit a change of grade request to Kyomu-ka.
*Don’t use this without checking first with Kyomu-ka or a full-time instructor. 920s are mostly used with nursing students, apparently. Another option is entering a failing score and then submitting a change of grade request when the needed work is submitted.
888
Pass. Only used forリエゾンゼミ (Freshman Seminar), which is a “pass/fail” subject.
800
Fail. No longer used. Was used only forリエゾンゼミ (Freshman Seminar). Now use 900.
You can also find these codes listed on the last page of the Universal Passport User’s Manual.
0-100
The minimum score to pass is a 60. Scores below 60 are failing grades based on insufficient student performance that does not fall under the 900, 910 or 920 criteria, i.e., they just didn’t do well enough on homework, in-class work and/or tests/quizzes to pass the course.
The score breakdown is roughly as follows:
90-100 秀 - A - Excellent/Superlative
80-89 優 - B - Great/Superior
70-79 良 - C - Good
60-69 可 - D - Pass/Acceptable
0-59 不 - F - Fail
