MATH

Math is the study of the measurement, properties, and relationships of quantities and sets, using numbers and symbols. Mathematics began as a response the needs in agriculture, business, and industry. In Egypt and Mesopotamia, evidence of math dates from the 2rd and 3rd century B.C.are found in both locations. There is some evidence of similar developments in India and China during this same period, but few records have survived. Math was at first practical and based on concrete objects and practical observations. Abstract thinking may have developed with the Babylonians who were aware of the necessity of proofs prior to the Greeks. A profound change occurred in the nature and approach to mathematics with the contributions of the Greeks who began to formally study and record mathematics such as geometry and calculus.
