Lighting lamps

Lighting earthen lamps with a cotton wick and Iluppai oil (Mahua tree) has been an ancient form of worship. Over the years, the custom has been given up even in ancient temples, due to either paucity of funds or indifference. A group of devotees has started the ‘Lighting Deepam' programme to provide temples with Iluppai oil with a focus on old temples in villages which are in need of attention. In the past six months the members have supplied oil to 50 temples, mostly in the Cauvery delta and North Arcot belt. Volunteers are required. Funds need to be collected, temples identified and the oil supplied. Land owners can help by providing space for planting Mahua trees. For details contact: S.
