ARML stands for the American Regions Mathematics League. Its annual competition brings together the nation's finest students. Each ARML Team is made up of 15 members. They meet, compete against, and socialize with one another, forming friendships and sharpening their mathematical skills. The competition is usually held on the first Saturday after Memorial Day each year, and teams compete simultaneously at several locations in the United States.
ARML problems cover a wide variety of mathematical topics including algebra, geometry, number theory, combinatorics, probability, and inequalities. The competition consists of several events, which include a team round, a power question (in which a team solves proof-oriented questions), an individual round, two relay rounds (in which a contestant solves a problem and passes his/her answer to another team member, who uses this answer to solve another problem), and a super relay.
While some large states have several local ARML orgnizations and/or ARML teams, Rhode Island State Math (ARML) Team is the only official organization in the State of Rhode Island that sends high school students to national ARML competitions.
Rhode Island Math (ARML) Team is supported by the Rhode Island Mathematics Teachers Association (RIMTA) and Rhode Island Math League (RIML). According to the RIMTA/RIML by-laws, the coach for Rhode Island Math (ARML) Team is approved by the RIMTA/RIML President. In 2012, Dr. Bin Yu of Rhode Island College was approved to become its new head coach to revive the Rhode Island Math (ARML) team because Rhode Island had not sent any team to the National ARML competitions for many years.
Under Dr. Yu's leadership, RI State has begun sending its Math (ARML) Team to National ARML competitions every year sicne 2013 (except the 2020-2021 season due to COVID). In 2014, RI Math (ARML) Team advanced to National ARML Division A for the first time in its history.
Beginning in 2021, RI State Math (ARML) Team started participating in the annual national ARML Local competitions remotely only.
