World War II Teach In
Roy Craver
A Turning Point of the World:
Mr. Roy Craver
Written by: Kevin Y., Destin C., and Malvin M.
After Roy Craver heard about Pearl Harbor he still continued to work at
the holding point. Roy was 17 at the time and lived at montour falls. The
Italian prisoners became Roy’s workers. They weren’t treated badly so
they respected him. They didn’t try to escape. They loaded many supplies
at the holding point. The supplies were loaded on railcars and shipped out
also. They held dances every weekend for the prisoners. They were also
allowed to go to theaters to watch movies. They learned a lot about Italy
from prisoners. There was no major action or event that happened around
where Roy lived, so his life was “work, work, work all day” Before the
war ended he met a girl named Shirly and married her later on.
Mr. Craver is now 76 years old. He works at a shop and does general
labor there. He also has a part time job as the town supervisor of
Horseheads. When World War 2 ended he went back home to Montour
Falls. He says, “you wouldn’t want to go back”. Mr. Craver felt he was
really lucky that he didn’t lose anyone really close to him during the war.
Many people had a hard life during World War 2 and Mr. Craver is just
one of the millions that experienced it. He is lucky it wasn’t worse.
Life back in the days of World War 2 and many few had an easy life.
Mr. Roy Craver was one of those people and lived through the
experience. He has shared his life before, during, and after with us and
the information should be treasured.
Roy Craver was only at the age of seventeen when the war started.
He went to high school. Mr. Craver also had many hobbies like
delivering papers and working at the shop for spare change. Roy liked to
go see movies with his friends but couldn’t always. He then heard the
news of the bombing from his radio at the time. The news surprised him
and he started working for the holding point. The holding point was a
prison for many Italians. This adjustment didn’t change his life much.
