Intro activity to the Five Senses:
The Brain Pop Jr. video titled, The Senses, is a great overview of the five senses:
It is important to connect the Five Senses with ways to describe properties of matter.
The study of popcorn can be done using all five senses:

Another way to use all five senses is in a study of gummy worms. The site below has some excellent ideas and a link to a unit about the Five senses on her TPT site.
Taste
A tasty way to explore the sense of taste:
Touch
The sense of touch can be explored through textures, temperatures, and wetness/dryness:
Here are two experiments to try:
Identifying 3D shapes by touch
Smell
An excellent activity that has students practice identifying different smells:
Sound
A lesson and resources on the sense of hearing:
Sight
Make observations using the hand lens. Draw scientific diagrams with labels.
Practice ordering colors by their gradation:
After all the senses have been explicitly taught, and students have a good understanding of the vocabulary associated with
this study, it would be fun to go out into the school yard for a Nature Scavenger Hunt. If kindergarten and first grade students
try this activity, they would need a list of items with corresponding pictures. I like the idea of using all the senses to find these items!
Perhaps some pleasant smelling items could be added to the list. I would not recommending taste to the list!
