Sword of Hrakel, a text adventure game, published by Romik Software in 1983, for the Commodore VIC 20. Romik Software was founded in 1982 by Gerry Rose and Mike Barton. Initially it developed games for the VIC 20 and the Dragon. In 1983 Gerry Rose left to form a new software house, Phoenix Software. The name "Romik" was formed from Gerry Rose and Mike Barton.
Created by David Angier and Andrew Baillie, "Sword of Hrakel" is a little known text adventure game, written for the VIC 20 with 3K expansion. It was written 30 years ago and yet there is very little on the Internet these days in recognition of this great game.
In the early 80s, there were a number of text adventures for the VIC 20, including such classics as Adventureland, Pirate Cove and Mission Impossible by Scott Adams. Sword of Hrakel was certainly in a league with these great text adventures and does not deserve to be forgotten. But unfortunately there is hardly any mention of this game on the Internet, and therefore the reason for the creation of this web site.
I remember playing this game in the mid to late 80s. I played many adventure games over the years, both text and graphic, but this was one that I never completed. I finished Adventureland, I finished Pirate Cove and Mission Impossible and most of the Sierra Graphic Adventures, such as the King's Quest series, the Spaces Quest series, the Police Quest series, etc., etc. But Sword of Hrakel remains as one adventure game that I never managed to complete. I remember spending hours playing this game, trying to find a way to progress beyond the rabid wolf, the man hanging in chains and the meditating guru, but I could never work it out.
That is the purpose of this web site, to attempt to finally solve the mystery of this game.
