Happy December!
Hope everyone is excited for the holidays! Check out
some of the events below which we have organized
this Fall season! 🍁🍂
Resume Writing Workshop- October 10
Our first virtual event for Fall 2023 featured Frank Goovaerts, the Director
of Student Career Success at Maseeh College. The event was specifically
designed to assist students in crafting effective resumes for the upcoming
engineering career fair.
Pizza Event- October 10
We hosted our initial in-person pizza gathering, bringing together SWE officers
and liaisons. During the event, we delved into discussions about upcoming activities
for the Fall term and had the opportunity to foster connections and
better understand one another.
Tech talk with AMD- October 18
We organized a collaborative event with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), featuring
Haripriya Ayyalasomayajula, a prominent female software development manager,
as the main speaker. During the event, she provided a concise overview of AMD,
discussed her roles, shared insights into the hiring process, highlighted internship
opportunities, and offered valuable interview tips. The session concluded with a Q&A
session, allowing attendees to interact with various engineers and employees from AMD.
Leadership Seminar with Amanda- October 21
Amanda Johnson serves as the advisor for the SWE Columbia River Section. In this seminar, we
gained a deeper understanding of SWE's mission and values, explored available
resources, delved into leadership roles, and received valuable tips tailored to our section.
SWE Conference in Los Angeles- October 26-28
The Society of Women Engineers hosted the world's largest conference for women in engineering and
technology from October 26 to October 28 in Los Angeles, CA. With over 20,000 attendees
participating both in-person and virtually, the event was a significant gathering.
Through SALP (Student Activities and Leadership Programs), our flight tickets and
conference registration costs were covered, allowing four of us to be fortunate attendees.
The conference provided a remarkable opportunity for networking with professionals and students from
diverse universities. With hundreds of sessions each day covering topics such as career management,
DEI, self-management, leadership, advocacy, and technical innovations, it proved to be a rich learning
experience. We highly recommend attending this conference at least once if given the chance, as it was
empowering to connect with inspiring female engineers and technologists.
During the event, Kate Maxwell, the opening keynote speaker, left a lasting impression with her quote,
"Opportunity lies on the other side of your comfort zone," serving as a wellspring of inspiration.
Joannie Fu's speech provided invaluable insights on the path to achieving extraordinary goals.
Lunch with female engineer-November 8
It was a small gathering at a local restaurant near PSU, where we engaged in an in-depth conversation with Anushka Bhadrawaj, a local female engineer and Ph.D. student. Currently employed as a Platform Signal Integrity Engineer at Intel, she also serves as our professional liaison for SWE.
