Dear friends,
please find attached the topics and guidelines for students and for the jury for Baltic Sea Philosophy Essay Event 2018! Please read them carefully. Here are some of the most important points plus some information about the schedule:
Participating schools will arrange a 120 minutes monitored essay writing event. The students are allowed to use English language dictionaries but no philosophical encyclopaedias, internet or any other sources.
The essays should be written in English. Unfortunately native English speakers cannot participate.
You may and are recommended to share the general guidelines with the students beforehand, but the topics are to be given only at the writing event.
Each school can send two of the best essays for the competition. The pre-selection will be done by the local teachers. We hope that the teachers try to make their choices according to the suggested criteria already during this preliminary round.
The essays should be sent to bspee.international@gmail.com by October 26th as Word-documents.
We'll start sending the essays for you to assess as soon as we receive them from schools. Each teacher is expected to assess five essays, but we are grateful if you'll be able to read more!
The deadline for assessments is November 3nd. We'll be grateful if you're able to give your assessments even earlier.
If there are great disparities (>3,0) between assessors in marking a particular essay it will receive an extra reading. This means that while some of you will receive essays for assessment even before October 26th, some of you will be asked to do assessments during the first days of November. Please let me know if you have any difficulties with the timing.
If you have any questions I'll be more than happy to help.
Looking forward to receiving your students' essays!
Best regards,
Katri Hämeenniemi
