Although the town of Summerton was not officially chartered by the S.C. Legislative Delegation until Christmas Eve, 1889, its history really began around 1830 to 1840. Plantation owners made their move inward to what was then called the “Summer Town” to escape from the mosquitoes along the Santee river. It was thought of as a health resort and safe retreat from the “malaria” of the swamp.
Summerton is ideally located in the heart of 'Santee Cooper Country' in historic Clarendon County, S.C., South Carolina, just a few miles from the shores of beautiful Lake Marion. It is about a one hour drive to nearby Columbia, Charleston, and Florence, S.C. Summerton has become known as a wonderful place to vacation, raise a family, run a business - or simply retire to, when all is said and done. The deep spiritual commitment and sound family values of its people are reflected in the many churches and close-knit residential communities in Summerton and the surrounding area.
According to the 2010 census, the town had a population of 1061. However, this number can be misleading. While Summerton retains the feel of a small rustic town, it also benefits from the creation of numerous new residential and business communities connected to it that are continuing to grow up around beautiful Lake Marion.
