Shelby Schrier '15 email 21July2015:

"Despite everything Summer was going through, she rarely missed practices, games, or team hangouts - and when she did, she would always drop a note, letting us know that she otherwise would've been there in a heartbeat. Every time Summer stepped onto the field, she was just so happy to be playing the game that she loved with the team that she loved, and her commitment to this team has made an incredibly positive impact on all of us. She was one of the most warm, brave, and inspiring persons I have had the pleasure of knowing, and I am so happy she was part of the DWCS community."

Elise Ferguson '18 Facebook post 22July2015:

"Lucky to have played with such a loyal and positive teammate, and more importantly blessed to have had the sweetest, brightest friend. I will miss you always."

Allison Steele '16 email:

"Summer was an inspiration to all around her. I remember one of the first times I got to know Summer was one of the first times she was cleared to practice after her mastectomy freshman year. She was full of energy and hustling harder than anyone else on the the team. At the end of practice as all of us scrambled to snag a seat in a car to get a ride back to campus, Summer was lacing up her running shoes getting ready to run back. I asked her if she wanted my spot in the car (initially just as a courtesy offer because I knew she was just a few weeks post-op) to which she responded, "No thanks, I want to run back because you never know when you won't be able to run again!" I decided to run back with her inspired by her mindset towards what would usually seem like a tiring task after a full practice. You didn't have to know Summer very well to know she took on any challenge put before her with the utmost tenacity. Trying to harness even the slightest bit of Summer's outlook on life has reminded me to not just take the easy road when given a choice, because you might not always have the luxury to chose in the future. Summer will be greatly missed among the team and she will most definitely never be forgotten."

Lindsay Keare '16 via email:

"When that "Roar" lip dub video featuring kids who were receiving treatment at DHMC came out and went viral across the country, I remember jokingly asking Summer why she wasn't in the video, knowing she would've been the oldest kid in it by far. "I know right?!? I'm so bummed I just missed when they were taping it," she told me. I can't remember if she got there too late or left too early, but I thought it was so awesome that she would've put herself out there to be in a video that way (she would've nailed it, I'm sure!), and especially now I wish she had been, if only for us to have another way to remember her and all her humor and positivity by."

"Today the world became a little less bright. To my dearest Sum, the hole you leave behind leaves us unsure of how it could ever be filled again. You were the brightest, kindest, and most positive person I've ever met and having you in my life has changed me forever. If I can live my life half as bravely and fully as you lived yours- I will consider that one hell of a life. I know you're always going to be looking out for us and making sure we don't get in too much trouble.

You fought harder than anyone could have asked and you proved that you were tougher than nails. You were truly the most inspirational person I have ever had the luck and privilege to call a friend. I will cherish the memories I have of you for the rest of my life.

I love you kid."

"We played pick up in the pouring rain today and you weren't there to make fun of me every time I screwed up, and I ate sushi for dinner and I was waiting for your lecture on how sick it is going to make me. It is finally starting to feel real that you're not coming back and it breaks my heart. All I know is that I can never thank you enough for being there for me as an incredible friend when I needed you the most, and someday I hope to have the positivity and determination that you do. I promise I will always be your cowgirl boot buddy, pong partner, FK, crazy dancer, friend, and teammate. Hold down the center mid fort for me until I get to see you again. I'll miss you lots Chica."

Natalie Salmanowitz '14 21July2015:"I remember the day we did wake-ups, she was in Dick’s house after getting a mastectomy I believe. Liz and I brought her a donut, told her the good news about making the team, and were asking how she was feeling after the surgery. She was so elated and happy to be on the team, but my favorite part of this memory is that she was like "I’m so sorry to kick you guys out, but I have to go get ready for Bio class- don't want to be late on my first day!" I couldn't believe she was already pumped to go sit in the back of a huge lecture hall after surgery, but clearly that was only a minor glimpse of her incredible tenacity."

"...the one thing I really have been able to think about positively in the midst of this sadness is our team. In the past two years, Summer brought more to the team than we gave her. She showed us true courage in the midst of all she was facing. But, I think we also gave her something in return. Summer and I talked numerous times on the drives from chemo —> practice about how great the team was, and how much of a family we were for her at Dartmouth."

"I came back into [internet] service today to learn that we recently lost one of the most courageous, compassionate people I've ever known. Although Summer was fighting cancer for the two years that I knew her, she never once let it define who she was. Instead she tirelessly focused on celebrating her own life and the lives of those around her, everyday. Even during treatment and days after surgeries, she'd be back at soccer practice with our team, doing whatever she could to continue to play the game she loved. We may have only gotten her for 20 years, but she left a mark on the world and those who loved her that's worthy of five lifetimes. I'm blessed to have known you Summer. I and so many people who knew you will continue to honor your incredible spirit by celebrating the joy in our lives everyday, attempting to live up to the example of gratitude and positivity that you set for us each day."
