We propose to integrate existing GSM network technology and sensors/MEMs to develop low cost scalable SCADA systems that can become a low-cost alternative to the costly wireless sensor networks. Wireless sensor networks have found applications in manufacturing industries, urban and remote infrastructure, homes, agriculture, and mining. The current systems use costly motes and ZigBee standards that are difficult to scale up.
The low-cost SCADA system that we develop proposes to lower the cost barrier, and create exponential, viral demand. A proto-type of the product to measure voltages of solar panels and communicate to the end-user is under development. Initially, we would like to target niche segments that need customized SCADA solutions to gain a better understanding of the customer needs and technical challenges. We would then leverage the expertise to deploy the product in large scale industrial and utility installations.
