1st Southern African Students Psychology Conference

The first ever Southern African Students Psychology Conference was held at the University of Botswana in Gaborone on the 26th and 27th of June 2009, ushered in by the theme ‘Re-imagining Psychology’. The conference aimed to encourage fresh, innovative ideas and to foster academic excellence amongst the Southern African students.

2nd Southern African Students Psychology Conference

The journey continued with the 2nd Southern African Students’ Psychology conference in 2011 with the theme aptly titled ‘Re-imagining Psychology: The Journey Continues’. Departments of Psychology at Unisa and the University of Botswana continued their partnership in fostering interconnectedness among students in the field of psychology.

3rd Southern African Students Psychology Conference

The 3rd Southern African Students’ Conference had vastly grown by the time it was held in 2013. The Departments of Psychology at Unisa and at the University of Witswatersrand in Johannesburg, forged a partnership that would once again see a successful event on the calendar. From re-imaging psychology the conference theme called ‘Psychology in Action’.

4th Southern African Students Psychology Conference

In spirit of collaboration within the Southern Africa, the Departments of Psychology at Unisa and at the University of Limpopo collaborated in hosting the 4th Southern African Psychology conference in 2015 in Polokwane. The conference turned to focus on ‘Psychology in Communities’.

5th Southern African Students Psychology Conference

The conference that took place in 2017 continued to engage in self-reflection. The conference was themed ‘Psychologies in Dialogue: Strengthening our African Connections’. The mandate of the conference was decolonising knowledge production and works towards Africanisation, ultimately producing a psychology for us and by us as Africans.

6th Southern African Students Psychology Conference

The conference that took place in 2019 was themed 'Co-constructing Psychologies: A transdisciplinary approach in the Human Sciences' and argued that historically, disciplines within the Human Sciences have developed their own intellectual capital without inter- and transdisciplinary collaboration being an integral niche of academic pursuit.
