Limit on number of participants: When more than 10 people show up to play, priority will be given to:
People who have signed up and paid the recreation fee.
Guests who have paid a $5 fee for the session.
Residents of Stow, MA
Over 30 years of age
Over 20 years of age (All players under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who accepts all risks of injury, etc.)
Initial team composition:
Players should choose up teams of 5 (or fewer if less than 10 people show up at the gym).
Order of arrival at the gym will be respected, i.e., the first 10 will play the first game regardless of match-ups.
One or more players may set the teams. For example, a single captain may split up players or two people could take turns picking teammates.
The players should endeavor to make the match-ups as fair and even as possible.
If a player objects to the teams, he may request adjustments.
Order of play ("2 Off, 2 On" or "Next Up"):
If 15 or fewer people are waiting in the gym at the start of the first game, winners will hold the floor.
Winners will continue to hold the floor until 16 or more people are waiting or playing.
If 16 or more people are waiting or playing in the gym at the start of the first game or during the final basket of any game, either "2 off, 2 on" or "Next Up" will apply.
If the group decides to play "2 Off, 2 On": The team on the floor that has played 2 games in a row will sit. The other team will play the next game. Anyone who sat 2 games in a row gets to play 2 games before having to sit again. Players who sat 1 game get to shoot for next.
If the group decides to play "Next Up": The six or more players sitting all get to play the next game. The winning players of the just ended game who have not played two games in a row get to shoot for the remaining spots.
The advantage of "2 Off, 2 On" is that everyone gets to play a minimum of 2 games in a row before sitting, but some will then sit 2 games before playing again. The advantage of "Next Up" is that nobody sits more than 1 game, but few get to play 2 in a row.
To minimize breaks, players may elect to buck up for odds and evens in lieu of shooting for the remaining spots.
If the number of people waiting or playing drops below 16 prior to the final basket of a game, the "2 off, 2 on" or "Next Up" rule is suspended and winners will again hold the floor.
Substitutes (e.g., in the event of an injury) may elect to return to the rotation after the game (i.e., they don't count their play as "on" for the purposes of "2 off, 2 on" or "Next Up"). If they choose to stay with their new team, they sit when it sits (e.g., if they loose the next game).
Rules of play:
Games are to 15 points unless otherwise stated before the start of the game.
Shots made with both feet outside the arc count 3 points.
All other shots count two points.
Jump ball goes to the possession arrow.
Players call fouls made against them. Do not call a foul you commit and respect the call!
Passes across the half court line are always permitted (even in 4-on-4) unless otherwise stated before the game starts.
A ball that goes into the backcourt without being touched by a defensive player will result in a change of possession.
No aggressive play, fighting, other unnecessarily roughness, or verbal threats. Keep arguments to a minimum.
Miscellaneous:
No children or other guests are permitted in the gym if they are not playing.
The order or rules of play may be modified by mutual consent of all players.
