Stevens Creek Neighbors Association (SCNA)
How we got out name
Stevens Creek is a living, vibrant, natural Creek that traverses through our neighborhood. It demarcates the western boundary between Sunnyvale and Los Altos, as well as the western boundary of SCNA.
Founded
We became an official Neighborhood Association in 2009.
Why we formed
Like many NA’s, we became more organized in response to a common concern affecting the entire neighborhood. In our case, it was the 2009 City Council decision to remove language from the Sunnyvale General Plan designed to protect the fragile, natural ecosystem of the Stevens Creek corridor and homeowners’’ rights in our neighborhood. As background, going at least as far back as the 1970’s – and perhaps even further – there have been periodic discussion about running a trail along Stevens Creek. As most of the land abutting Stevens Creek in Sunnyvale is in the legal hands of private owners, and because, unfortunately, homes, office buildings, apartments, parking lots, and roads have been built far too close to the banks of Stevens Creek, there is not sufficient public land on which to build a public trail. Long-term residents of this neighborhood, seem to have to demonstrate these facts and advocate for the protection of the ONLY remaining natural wildlife habitat in Sunnyvale, repeatedly, decade after decade. In 1994, these stalwart neighbors finally obtained permanent protection by having language inserted into the Sunnyvale General Plan. In 2009, very few residents of what is now the Stevens Creek Neighbors Association received one week notice of a hearing to remove this language from the General Plan. It was an affront to residents that short notice was given in such a spotty way on such an important issue. In response, a vibrant and active neighborhood association was formed.
What's unique about SCNA?
We have various events throughout the year, but we have two that seem to have the greatest participation. The first is our neighborhood “spring clean-up” event, which occurs every spring. The City of Sunnyvale graciously provides free dumpsters for us, which are
positioned throughout the neighborhood. Neighbors congregate and share stories as we all take care of spring cleaning.
