The ancient trade route between Europe and China passed over the rugged Pamir mountains--the "roof of the world" to  early travelers like Marco Polo.

The Baluch---nomads, farmers and fishermen of the desolate region of  southwest  Pakistan and southeast Iran--in the past were widely notorious as raiders and pirates. Nowadays many support low-level insurrections against the wider governments controlling their territory.

Steve Pastner carried out nearly 2 years of research among these tribesmen between 1968 and 1982.
