Our History: Founded in 1991, the firm of Stephen J. O'Connor & Associates serves the small business community of the New York Greater Metropolitan Area. Servicing in excess of 85 small business clients, our essential mission is that of part-time Chief Financial Counsel to firms too small to afford a full time CFO, yet acutely in need of ongoing, practical financial advisory services available at their behest. Formerly a commercial lender, as well as a Treasurer of a medium-sized manufacturing concern, Mr. O'Connor was awarded, with distinction, a Masters in Business Administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Enrolled by the U.S. Department of Treasury to represent taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service, and an Accredited Tax Advisor with the A.C.A.T, Steve's wealth of professional and formal educational experience uniquely qualifies him for the breadth of demands placed upon any full service financial executive. A distinctive element of Steve's practice, a convention to which nearly all business clients, and a fair number of personal clients, enlist, is the institutionalization of business and financial planning as part of the management process. Bringing entrepreneurs, oftentimes kicking and screaming, outside their businesses on a periodic basis enables them to focus on critical, objective decisions, both tactical and strategic, that the dynamics of a commercial enterprise requires. Goals most often set include those of profit maximization, cash flow optimization, tax minimization, strategic market design and revenue setting, compliance specification, and personal wealth building. There is nothing like variety, and a lot of it, to keep ideas and perspectives fresh. Steve, unlike many other such practitioners, consults with many (additional) dozens of small business owners through his relationship with the New Jersey Small Business Development Centers at the Rutgers and Bergen Community College campuses. Steve, in association with these Centers, gives seminars on a variety of topics critical to the start-up and operation of a small business. Half- and full-day sessions in this offering include the following topics: Preparing Business Plans; Cash Flow Management; Taxes for Small Business; and Books and Record Keeping for Small Business. Initially intended to serve the Northern New Jersey business community, the practice has grown to include a fair number of commercial clients in New York State as well.
