What is STEM Education?
STEM Education is the teaching of four specific subjects; science, technology, engineering, and mathematics based on a curriculum. Rather than having these four subjects taught, STEM puts them together in a learning experience based on the actual world. The U.S has been a big leader in these subjects throughout history, however, in recent years fewer and fewer students have been seen taking these subjects in recent years. To prevent this, the U.S government has called out to organizations and for teachers to specialize in this field of teaching. Rather than having very little students interested in STEM fields by the time they graduate, the government wants more students to be involved in this field of study.
Why is STEM education important?
STEM education is very important because even more and more positions are needed in this field of study. As our technology advances even more and more, we need even more people to be able to work with it and therefore the demand for workers increases. Most of the technology that we have today is created with a blend of all four of these subjects. Since most people do not like the four subjects that are required for the STEM field, demand for majors in those subjects is very high in several countries across the globe. This is why demand for STEM education is very high and why it is extremely important for more people to graduate with these majors.
How can STEM education shape the future?
STEM Education can shape the future by getting more young people involved in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It can also shape the future because since there will be more people working in the STEM field more advances can be made to technology and the world around us. Another way that it will shape the future is by getting more people to get a higher education and therefore more people will be seen working in higher jobs. STEM education can also shape the future because people will be able to understand how things work and will know what it is that they are using. The future can be shaped by STEM education in those ways but there are more ways that just those.
STEMSOS Model:
Project Based Learning (PBL) is a constructivist instructional approach where students are engaged in meaningful inquiry of personal interest to them and where collaboration and personalized learning are emphasized. Research confirms that PBL is an effective and enjoyable way to learn and develop deeper learning competencies required for success in college, career and civic life. -Buck Institute of Education
STEMSOS is a rigorous, interdisciplinary, standards-focused, and engaging STEM teaching approach that is teacher-facilitated, student-centered and directed through sets of project- and inquiry-based (P&IBL) projects. STEMSOS PBL approach is to maintain the focus on standards-based teaching while enriching and extending the learning of students through PBL projects. The goal is to promote not only collaborative skills and student ownership of learning but also to promote student success in state and national standards.
STEMSOS PBL Showcase is designed to promote and share exemplary student work in PBL projects that can serve as valuable learning and teaching tools for students, parents, teachers, and other educators.
