Dr Stella Tsani is Associate Professor at the Department of Economics, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, specializing in sustainable development, energy, natural resource management, and economic policy. She is the 2025 EUSEW Women in Energy Award winner, honored by the European Commission for her contributions to Europe's energy transition. In 2022, she became the first scholar in Greece to join the Global Young Academy, where she co-leads work on the SDGs, foresight, and innovation actions.
Dr Tsani engages regularly in prestigious actions at the science-policy interface. She is a lead author of the 7th Global Environment Outlook (GEO-7), the flagship environmental assessment of the United Nations Environment Programme, contributing to the economic and financial transformations necessary for the sustainability transition. Dr Tsani is an invited expert in the IPCC 7th Assessment Report scoping process. She has contributed to the International Energy Agency (IEA) Clean Energy Innovation Policies in Emerging and Developing Economies report, and serves on expert boards, including the European Commission’s Cohesion for Transitions (C4T) Community of Practice, Just Transition Platform, and Water4All SRIA update.
She sits on the Board of Directors of the Euro-Mediterranean Forum of Institutes of Economic Sciences, is a member of the MED2050 foresight group, the UNEP/Mediterranean Action Plan Working Group on Ocean Economy and Sustainable Finance, and the ORCID Researcher Advisory Council, supporting governance and actions that create value to researchers and facilitate research and innovation. She is a Smithsonian Science Education Center Scientist Ambassador for the Network for Emergent Socio-Scientific Thinking (NESST) and has supported the development of their youth guide on the “Ocean”.
Dr. Tsani is an experienced scientific coordinator, partner, or board member in national and international research projects (more than 40 funded by the EU, World Bank, Bank of Greece, EEA Grants) and serves as an expert evaluator for major funding agencies (French National Research Agency, Norwegian Research Council, Onassis Foundation, Kazakhstan National Center of Science and Technology Evaluation). She has served as a reviewer for the IPCC Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere, as an International Science Council expert delegate to the UN Water Conference and policy brief author, as well as European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) Body of Knowledge expert and start-up mentor.
Her interdisciplinary research applies systems perspective and economic tools to sustainability, energy, natural resources (especially water, hydrocarbons, and renewables), policy analysis, economic-energy-environmental modelling, and scenario analysis, with publications in leading journals such as Energy Economics, Resources Policy, Environmental Science & Policy, and Economic Modelling. She has extensive professional experience with multi-sectoral networks across the knowledge triangle. She leads GY-Energy, a young researchers and youth initiative on energy awareness and participation and is a member of STEM Women Global and the Sustainable Development Solutions Network.
