Birth

Joseph was born in 1812 in Pennsylvania. It's not clear whether it was Warwick Township, Lancaster County, or just to the north in East Pennsboro Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. It appears that the family moved sometime in 1812, and we know neither the date of the move nor Joseph's birthday.

Death

Joseph died in April of 1878. He was buried in a cemetary south of Pierceton, Kosciusko County, Indiana.

His obituary, 18 April 1878, courtesy of Roger Paul:

"Joseph Stauffer died last week. His remains were interred in the cemetery south of Pierceton."

Roger says, "He was a farmer in the Pierceton area. He is buried in the old section of the Protestant Cemetary south of Pierceton. There is no headstone today. Pierceton is in Kosciusco Co. The county received its first settlers in 1836. Joseph migrated there and settled in 1838. The land records show he bought a parcel there in 1838."

The 1850 census has him and the fam in Washington Township, Kosciusko County, which is Pierceton. In 1860, they're in Wayne Township (which is essentially the town of Warsaw). In 1870, they're in Johnson Township, LaGrange County. But they brought him back to Washington Township to be laid to rest in the Pierceton Cemetery.
