Several years ago Graeme Ruxton and I wrote a short textbook on Experimental design for the life sciences. The aim was to produce a short, cheap introduction for undergraduates which would give them a grounding in the key elements of design, without being technical or mathematical.
We had in mind a book that you would give to a student prior to their first project, which they could read in an afternoon, and would cost no more than a few pints.
The book has been very well received, and we are currently working on the 4th edition. It has also been translated into several languages.
Here are some of the nice things people have said on Amazon
"This is an outstanding book on experimental design. You won't get a better written book by clever and user-friendly authors. Fab!"
"It's easy to read, and can be read at leisure (I find it hard to concentrate on some text books). Its quite small, making it attainable to read the whole book, and it will improve the way you approach experimental design. I'm a PhD student, so have designed a few experiments in the past. This book really pin points what you should be thinking about and why in a clear concise way. Its good at emphasising why you should take time to do certain things, and also what you should do if those things just aren't feasible. It also gives examples to illustrate points"
