About Our Organization

The Sharing The Ability to Read (STAR) Adult Literacy program of Dewitt-Livingston-Logan-McLean counties is a grant funded organization dedicated to:

Helping adult learners improve their reading, writing, and math skills

Helping English language learners improve their ability to speak, read, write, and understand English

Providing volunteer opportunities to residents of Bloomington-Normal and other communities in surrounding counties

Partnering with local libraries, schools, churches, and community centers to provide free one-on-one or small group tutoring to adult learners in safe and convenient locations

STAR Adult Literacy trains and matches volunteer tutors to work with adult learners either one-on-one or in small groups. Tutoring services are free to students ages 18+.

The STAR Literacy project is made possible by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a division of the Office of Secretary of State, using state funds designated for literacy.
