About Our Organization

Dewitt-Livingston-Logan-McLean County STAR Adult Literacy is a grant-funded organization dedicated to:
  • helping adult learners improve their reading, writing, and basic math skills
  • helping English language learners improve their ability to speak, understand, read, and write English
  • providing volunteer opportunities to residents of the Bloomington-Normal and its surrounding communities
  • partnering with local libraries, schools, churches, and community centers to provide free one-on-one or small group tutoring to adult learners in safe, convenient locations

Sharing the Ability to Read (STAR) is a volunteer effort to help reduce illiteracy in Dewitt, Livingston, Logan and McLean Counties STAR trains and places volunteer tutors with adults who want to improve basic skills in reading, writing, and math, or who want to learn English as a second language.

Tutors are placed with students either one-to-one or in small groups at convenient, public locations around Bloomington-Normal and surrounding communities.

The STAR Literacy project was made possible by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a division of the Office of Secretary of State, using state funds designated for literacy.
