Liam Houlihan - R.I.P. - 7th May 2013

The St. Anne's Club are saddened today to hear of the sad bereavement of Liam Houlihan who was one of the clubs longest standing members. Liam served the club for many years as Chairman & Vice Chairman and on various other roles within the club. Liam was also elected as president of the Pitch and Putt Union of Ireland in the 1990’s.

Liam administered every rule without favour and was a consistent voice in our game. Liam was a talented pitch and putt course designer and loved the challenge offered by tight spaces which he expertly designed. The Liam Houlihan Scratch Cup has been in place for a number of years now and is the pinnacle of the clubs Open Championship.

The St. Anne's Club and community wish to extend our sympathy to Liam’s family. As a mark of respect the course will close on Thursday next until 6pm. Please click on the link below for details of Liam's funeral arrangements:

Dunscombe claims Club Strokeplay title

Kieran Dunscombe won the annual club strokeplay title by defeating Darren Collins in a tough & close 9 hole play off after both players tied on 93 gross. In blustery wind and rain both players traded birdies and mistakes against each other and , In what turned out to be more of a matchplay type affair in the end both were level with each other on -1 after 7 holes and the turning point came on the 8th hole when Darren missed his 3ftr for par handing the advanatge to Kieran who duly accepted and hit a great pitch to the 9th hole to within 3ft. Darren missed his 5ft putt to put any pressure on Kieran who then slotted in his putt for his 2nd win in 3 years.

Congratulations to Frank Dineen who has been picked for the Cork Senior InterCounty team 2011 for Portmarnock. Congrats to Ian Leech aswell, who picked up 36-hole Inter Gross in the Bruff Scratch Cup at the August bank holiday weekend.

24th of July: Senior All-Ireland.

Gents All-Ireland Strokeplay: Frank Dineen & Darren Collins made the Final-18 playoffs with great scores of -12under and -11under, respectively. Darren turned -7under and quickly moved to -10under in the front 9 but unfortunately couldn't seem to get a blaze of -2's going in the back 9, which could of easily seen him be in the top 3 leader's circle. Frank played very well today but a few putts just seemed to leak off line. They were chasing a leader of -16under, a 4 & 5 shot lead: JR Crangle. John O'Sullivan narrowly missed out in the playoff by 2 shots. Darren finished -4under for the Final 18. Frank finished level for the Final 18. The title eventually being won by Anthony O'Loughlin of Claycastle who powered his way to a final -25under par for the 3 rounds on the slick Douglas greens.Congratulations to Anthony as he is a well-deserved winner and for a fellow that gives so much back to the game, with the work he does on his home course. Well done Anthony from St.Annes Club!

23rd July: Intermediate All-Ireland.

Daniel Long has won Runner-Up in the All-Ireland Intermediate Strokeplay in Douglas today. After a steely first 18 holes, he turned -2 under. He followed that with an incredible -10under to become leader of the All-Ireland and be in the final pairings of the 18hole playoff. A tremendous score of -7under par for the first nine of his second 18 laid the foundation for Daniel's leading score of 96.

Daniel has risen quickly through ranks of intermediate as of late with his 'all-round' game. He has established himself as one of the best intermediates in Ireland, which was only proven again today. Leading Intermediate qualifiers on many occasions and winning inter-club prizes.

He entered the playoffs and was 3 shots ahead after 6 holes and 2 shots ahead after 10 but in a twist of fate Shane Murphy came through with a -6under to pip Dan by only 4 shots in the end. A great attempt by the young Daniel to secure an All-Ireland victory and this great player, the nephew of previous All-Ireland Senior winner (Donal Long), has stamped his authority now in the inter ranks as a player to be reckoned with. An outstanding first time All-Ireland performance and well done Daniel from all the members and committee of St.Annes P&P. Well done aswell to James McKeown after a steady performance today and making the final 18hole playoffs.

22nd of July

Best of luck to our 2 intermediates: Daniel Long & James McKeown, and our 3 seniors: John O'Sullivan, Darren Collins & Frank Dineen who will play for All-Ireland Champion titles this weekend in Douglas. If any of these players strike form on the day, the cup will go Leeside again.... watch this space!

18th of July

Chairman's (Darren Collins) Prize:

While the golfers were playing against testing conditions this weekend across the water in The Open, us St.Annes' players had our own conditions to contend with this weekend in the Chairman's Prize. With gale force winds, rain, the greens were cut to 14.x on the stimpmeter!! (very fast), the greens were firm from the recent spell of hot weather & pin positions strategically placed in tough positions.

The winner of the Chairman's Prize (overall nett) was Charlie O'Sullivan. Charlie has been playing very well lately and with a new putter to the arsenal he has been 'rake-ing' in putts from every angle. As he is quickly approaching the Intermediate ranks, he is sure to rise to the challenge when he enters intermediate-level in the very near future.

Other prize winners were:

Senior Nett: Kieran Dunscombe

Senior Gross: Mick O'Connell

Inter Nett: `` Daniel Long

Inter Gross: George Mulcahy

Junior Nett: Robert O'Connor

Junior Gross: ` Frank O'Callaghan

Juvenile: Jake Galvin

Thanks to all other members, who played, for their continued support of the club in these tournaments & for their work on the course. The next tournament in the calendar is the Captain's Prize (Pat de Painter), which is to be played from 4th Aug-7th Aug.

11th July

Cork Strokeplay

Liam Myers who carded a fantastic 88 gross on Sat topped the qualifying for the Cork Strokeplay event which took place on Sunday at the beautiful venue of Iniscarra. Liam was shocked at how well he played due to the fact that he hasn't spent much time on the course in recent months due to the new addition to the family but all I'll say is it could be the secret to more success !!!

Liam tee'd off on Sunday and not being too familiar with the Inisacarra course well this must be said for alot of the players as the course was a true test and one of the toughest courses to score low on. However if you turned around to Liam that morning and said he would have a putt to win on the last hole im sure he would have jumped at the chance.

But thats what exactly transpired yesterday

Four players stood waiting on -10 and a possible 5-way play off and Liam had a putt on the last for a 97 total and his first co championship win , A 6tf putt awaited Liam and in front of a packed gallery of officials , players & supporters Liam stood over the putt with a slight left to right break he slotted it in to rupterous applause.

Cogratulations Liam !!!!!!!!

Also to note our own Ian Leech brought honour once again to the club , After the 36 hole Intermediate event Ian was tied on 104 and hence a 9 hoel play off had to take place. Ian played solid stuff in the play off but was pipped at the end by B.Murphy from Pfizers. It was a great tournament for the St Annes club as the seniors picked up the team event also.

Well done all and keep the St Annes flag flying !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
