The Select Society of Sanitary Sludge Shovellers (SSSSS or 5S's) recognises those who have contributed their considerable talents and efforts to both the success and development of their national waste water organisations and the industry as a whole. The SSSSS provides a genuine method of expressing recognition and gratitude for these significant contributions over many years.
Nomination for membership is by peer invitation, with successful nominees requiring majority support. Such an election procedure ensures the high reputation and integrity of the SSSSS is maintained. Most chapters have a fixed maximum number of members, and membership is for life.
Conceived by A W 'Dusty' Miller and F Carlyle Roberts Jr, the SSSSS had its beginnings in Arizona, US, where the first chapter was inaugurated in late 1940. Stimulated by success, the SSSSS spread and chapters now flourish globally as well as in many States and regions across the US.
SSSSS international chapters have been established in the United Kingdom, Canada, The Netherlands, Brazil, Japan, Sweden, Australia and New Zealand. Although operating independently, the chapters share the same goals in spite of the distances between them.
The original constitution of the SSSSS requires each chapter of the SSSSS to elect one its shovellers as their ‘Influent Integrator’ or II. The main duty of this key person is to handle the administration of their particular chapter, which involves organising meetings and events, the keeping of records and accounts and taking responsibilty for providing certificates and the society's "shovel" emblem for presentation to newly elected shovellers. IIs remain in post until their exhaustion or some other welcome relief provides an escape route.
Some chapters such as the UK chapter also have another key elected official, "the Dean". The Dean has the responsibility of guiding and directing their particular chapter through the changing demands of the profession. The prominent person is appointed to this prestigious role according to seniority of membership. The role of Dean is limited to a maximum of one year.
On the left is a picture of the the official emblem of recognition, a miniature golden shovel generally worn as a lapel pin or tie clasp. At meetings, all shovellers display their shovel as a sign of mutual respect for colleagues, as well as in respect of the SSSSS and its traditions. The Dean presents the emblem to new members in a time honoured ceremonial involving the inductee being relieved of a crisp, high denomination currency note.
