1st Annual SS Polar Bear Plunge - January 1, 2010.
The 1st Annual SS Polar Bear Plunge took place on New Years Day 2010 at the Meadow Hill Estates community pool in Frisco as a tribute to Scott Sullivan, who passed away suddenly on New Year’s Day 2009. Scott left behind a wife and three children and an abundance of family members and good friends.
Scott had a zeal for life and was always willing to help out a child who wanted to play sports, but didn’t have the means. Because of Scott’s generous heart, the Scott Sullivan Scholarship Fund was set up. This memorial is dedicated to providing registration fees and financial support for the development of young athletes with significant financial need, pre-school to high school age, girls and boys. It reinforces Scott’s generous dedication and love of youth athletic programs. By providing resources necessary to play on youth sports teams, youngsters will learn teamwork, sportsmanship and have fun while developing positive relationships with dedicated adults, self-confidence, self-esteem and superior level athletic skills needed to excel in sports.
So as a tribute to Scott, the SS Polar Bear Plunge was created to help bring in additional revenue for the Scott Sullivan Scholarship Fund and more importantly to alleviate the heartbreak caused to so many last New Year’s Day 2009. Over 200 people came out to cheer on the 80+ adults and children who took the frigid plunge on New Year’s Day! The event, which took place at 11:00am in 37-degree temps, was a huge success. Over $6,700 was raised for the Scott Sullivan Scholarship Fund and donations are still coming in!
Special thanks go out to Frisco’s Mayor Maher Maso who was on hand for the festivities, along with “Ike” the polar bear mascot from the Texas Tornados Hockey Team. The Frisco Fire Department was also there to lend moral support, as were several lifeguards. The Miracle League of Frisco provided the music and sound system for the event. Mike Schwietz, President of the SS Polar Bear Plunge Committee, along with Mayor Maso emceed the event. The SS Polar Bear Plunge committee, which is made up of dear friends and relatives of Scott, along with numerous volunteers helped make this event the huge hit it was!
