Knoxing Instructions
Artististic swimmers coat their hair with unflavored Knox gelatin, the same “stuff” used in jello. Mixed with hot water, the liquid gelatin is brushed onto their hair. The gel hardens and, in addition to keeping the hair out of their face, helps the swimmers to have a uniformed look. After competition, shampoo and warm water will removed the gel.
Some swimmers gel their hair the night before competition, but make sure the gel is very dry before going to bed. Most swimmers gel the morning of competition.
Supplies:
Knox unflavored gelatin, 4 envelopes
Plastic bowl to mix gel
Paint brush or basting brush
Comb/brush
Bobbie pins (same color as hair)
Hair binders (rubber bands, not wrapped hair bands)
Hair net (same color as hair)
Hair dryer
Essential oil (if you need to scent the knox for your swimmer)
Steps:
Pull hair into a bun high on top of the head, pinning loose hairs down. The bun should sit high on the crown of the head.
Wrap hair net over the bun and fasten it down with pins and hair binders.
Empty all 4 gelatin envelopes into a bowl or cup. Pour a small amount of boiling water over the gelatin. Whisk to dissolve. Continue to add water little by little to achieve a consistency of honey or thick syrup. *Note: can also make in a crockpot - see section below*
Add a little cool water to cool mixture down (if necessary) or allow to cool long enough that you do not burn your swimmer.
Place a towel over swimmer’s shoulders to catch drips and protect clothing.
Paint a coat of gel onto hair using the paintbrush. Cover all hair, especially the bun. Be careful around the face and hairline. Dried gel can pull and be itchy. Be sure to work quickly because the gel will thicken as time goes by, making it harder to work with.
Allow gel to dry until it is tacky and then paint on another coat.
Pin headpiece in place before gel is completely dry. Use LOTS of pins to secure it into place.
To finish setting faster, blow lightly with a hair dryer on the coolest setting.
Crockpot Knox Recipe
Covers 1 head with additional gel for touch ups:
Twelve (12) packets of Knox gelatin (~1/4 cup)
1 cup of lukewarm water (using lukewarm water will ensure no lumps or clumps)
Plastic spoon or small whisk
Slow cooker/crock pot
You may prepare a smaller or larger quantity of gel by using the ratio of 4 packets of gel to 1/3cup water. Leftover gel may be frozen and defrosted on counter or reheated for re-use.
Empty 12 packets of Knox gelatin into an appropriately sized Crockpot then slowly add 1 cup lukewarm tap water while very gently stirring the water and gel powder with a spoon or whisk. Stirring slowly is the key to avoiding unwanted bubbles and foam from developing during the mixing process. The mixture will be thick, clumpy and white at this point.
Plug in the crockpot and cover and leave for 1⁄2 hour.
Return to examine and stir gently if needed. Leave for another half hour and check again.
Depending on the intensity of heat of crockpot, the gel will take 1-2 hours to melt and form a clear liquid resembling a diluted clear golden honey. At this point the gel can be used in the hair or poured into a plastic container, sealed and refrigerated or frozen for use at a later date.
