2019-2020 Welcome!

Hey Incoming Team! We are so excited for a new year to begin. We love teaching, love 8th graders, and love math, so we know this is going to be a great year!! Below you will see two introductions, one from me (and you can get more on my "About Me" page) and one from our student teacher this fall, Mrs. Caty Betts.

Ms. Sprigg's Intro

You can learn about me on my about me page. I began teaching in 2000 at RVMS, but have spent the bulk of my career (12 years!) in the MVHS feeder. MRMS is home, and I'm glad to be back for a second year with 8 Blue. I spent my summer doing a little bit of tutoring, a LOT of hiking and walking, attending summer concerts, and baking. I LOVE baking and cake decorating. See my "About Me" page for some photos from this summer's adventures!

Mrs. Betts' Intro

Hey everyone. I am very excited to be in Ms. Sprigg's class as a student teacher this fall! I have a B.S. in Computer Science and will complete my Master of Education in Math this December. I spent a lot of last spring observing Ms. Sprigg's classroom and am lucky to have the opportunity to work with her this fall. I have two young girls at home (7 and 10) and spent this summer camping, hiking and biking with my husband and children. When I have time, I love reading, crocheting and quilting. I look forward to meeting everyone and learning from the 8 Blue team! Below is a picture of me with my family hiking up Mt. Falcon in Morrison.

2/23/2019--Remind 101--VERIZON UPDATE

Good news! Verizon customers will continue to receive REMIND 101 updates!

1/14/2019--Remind 101--VERIZON UPDATE

If you are subscribed to REMIND 101 messages and use Verizon, please see the note below. Specifically, find the links below to download the free application OR enable email notifications instead of texts.

Hi Natalie,

We’re sorry to write with disappointing news. Recently, we learned that Verizon will be charging Remind a new fee that makes it impossible for us to continue supporting free text messaging for anyone who has Verizon Wireless as their phone carrier. Please read on for all the important details—we promise to keep this as short as we can.

What’s happening?

To offer our text messaging service free of charge, Remind has always paid for each text that our users receive or send. Now, Verizon is charging Remind an additional fee intended for companies that send spam over its network. Your Remind messages aren’t spam, but our efforts to resolve the issue with Verizon haven’t been successful.

As a result, the Verizon fee will increase our costs of providing text messaging by 11X—pushing our annual costs into the millions of dollars. This isn’t financially feasible for us to support, and it’s forcing us to end Remind text messaging for everyone who has a wireless plan with Verizon.

How will this affect you?

Beginning January 28, 2019, the people in your classes who normally get your Remind messages as texts will no longer receive these messages if they have Verizon Wireless as their phone carrier.

What can you do?

To make sure people in your classes continue receiving your messages, ask them to download the mobile app or enable email notifications—both of which are free of charge. Our team’s also working hard on a solution that allows your classes to continue to use Remind by text, and we’ll share more details with you before January 28.

In the meantime, we’ll keep fighting to make sure educators, students, and parents have access to effective communication. To do this, we need your help: If using Remind has made a positive impact in your classroom, at your school, or anywhere in between, please ask Verizon to reverse the fee here: www.remind.com/verizon-fee

12/12/2018--Updates

  • Notes that you may want to use on the Math 8 Midterm: Notes

11/19/2018--Updates

  • **Math Notice: All missing work, late work, and retakes that were assigned in November will be due no later than Monday, December 3rd. This includes work from the week of November 26th-November 30th. After this time students will not be able to retake, make up, or turn in work for substantial credit.**

In Math 8 (Periods 2, 4, 5, 6) we will continue to work with how shapes transform, but will begin to examine angle relationships, especially in triangles, exterior and interior angles, and in parallel lines with transversals. This is very hands-on and visual. Kids will want a protractor. I have about 24 to use in class, but students who have their own should bring them.

Important dates in the next few weeks (note, these are tentative!)

  • Periods 2, 4, 6--Parallel Lines Exit Sip 1-Thursday the 29th

  • Period 5--Transformations Unit Test on Friday the 30th

  • Period 5--Parallel Lines Exit Sip 1--Monday December 3

  • Periods 2, 4, 6--Parallel Lines Exit Sip 2--Tuesday December 4

  • Periods 2, 4, 6--Parallel Lines Exit Sip 3--Thursday December 6

  • ALL CLASSES--I-Ready Monday/Tuesday December 10th/11th

  • Periods 2, 4,5,6- MRMS Math 8 Mid-Term Assessment Wednesday/Thursday December 12th/13th

  • Periods 2, 4, 5, 6--Design your own Parallel Lines Challenge Due Friday December 14th

  • Period 5--Parallel Lines Exit Sip 2--Friday December 14th

  • Periods 2,4,6--Partner Quiz on Parallel Lines-Friday December 14th

  • Period 5--Partner Quiz on Parallel Lines-- Monday December 17th

In Algebra we will continue to work with inequalities as a review, but move into working with polynomial operations. We will identify polynomials, write them, add/subtract/multiply them and work on using area models to make sense of the multiplication and organize our thinking. This will lead into factoring/dividing polynomials which will continue into quarter 3.

Important dates in the next few weeks (note, these are tentative!)

  • Polynomial Exit Slip 1--Wednesday November 28th

  • Polynomial Exit Slip 2--Monday December 3rd

  • Polynomial Exit Slip 3-Monday December 10th

  • MRMS Algebra Mid-Term Assessment Wednesday December 13th

  • Polynomial Partner Quiz--Monday December 17th

11/2/2018--Updates

  • Thank you for the donations of supplies! As the year progresses we will always need pencils and dry erase markers. Hand sanitizer as we enter cold/flu season is also appreciated.

  • I am ALWAYS here by 6:30am for extra help or retakes. An email to warn me is great so I'm not stuck in the copy room or I can let students know if I have hall duty.

  • I LOVE the kids on 8 Blue this year! What a wonderful group!

9/27/2018--Finance Park Field Trip Information

  • FIELD TRIP TO FINANCE PARK

We will be taking a field trip to the Junior Achievement Finance Park on Friday, October 26th. We will be leaving around 8:45 and returning around 2:15.

Finance Park helps students build a foundation for making intelligent, lifelong, and personal financial decisions through hands-on, realistic simulation experiences. The program includes in-school activities culminating in the JA Finance Park simulation. They will be learning about credit cards, loans, typical household bills, budgeting, and stocks/investments as they relate to real life scenarios. For more information, please see their website at http://www.jacolorado.org/finance-park-2/. There is also a video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAzcbrMqgv8.

The entrance fee of $45 for this trip is covered by sponsors. You will only need to pay the bus fee of $19.00. Students will also need a sack lunch on this day. You will need to register, complete the permission slip, and pay through MY SCHOOL BUCKS. A link to this website is available on the front page of the MRMS website. Scroll to the bottom right of the site and look for my School Bucks. When you login, search for Finance Park, and choose the 8 Blue link. Complete the form and process through entirely to checkout once you have put the trip in your cart. Please call the bookkeeper at 303-387-1808 if you have any questions or email Margene.Greeno@dcsdk12.org.

We will also need 10 volunteers for each day to chaperone this trip. Several of you have already volunteered, so thank you. If others are interested, please contact nsprigg@dcsdk12.org.

Welcome!!

My name is Natalie Sprigg and I am excited to be returning to MRMS!

Please see the "About Ms. Sprigg" page if you want more details about my experience as an educator and a few details about my life outside of school.

I admit, and own, the fact that I am a numbers nerd. I was never cool growing up and am totally ok with that. Math was not easy for me and I really struggled to do well. I use that knowledge and experience in my own classroom every day. At the same time, I love math and the fascinating interactions between numbers, and shapes and patterns and how math works the way it does. I hope that you'll enjoy that enthusiasm and will join me in being an occasional "numbers nerd."

I am excited to be back in a middle school, teaching 8th grade mathematics this year. I love the students at MRMS and the positive energy they bring each day. I am confident this is going to be a wonderful year together!
