IF YOU CAN MAKE IT HERE YOU CAN MAKE IT ANYWHERE...
STEVE'S FIRST INTENTION UPON ARRIVAL IN NYC WAS TO GET THE BEST INSTRUCTION AND CONTACTS AVAILABLE.
NYC, as music mecca for a midwest kid, provided Steve with his first taste of national success. Leber-Krebs Mgt. (Aerosmith) signed Steve on as a touring and session artist. Steve toured and recorded with the top names in rock and appeared with countless bands and recording sessions and TV appearances, later signing to Bill Aucoin Mgt.(Kiss).
Steve studied with and became a protege of Bernard Purdie (for feel) Jim Chapin (for charts and the Moeller Method) and Stanley Spector (for theory).
FROM CHICAGO RELOCATED TO LAUREL BEACH CONNECTICUT OUTSIDE OF NEW HAVEN WHERE WE WERE IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO OUR NEW CIRCLE OF GIGS THROUGHOUT THE NORTHEAST. I WAS COMMUTING TO AND FROM NEW YORK TAKING LESSONS WITH BERNARD PURDIE AND STANLEY SPECTOR.
THE VILLAGE VOICE WAS THE MUSICIANS BIBLE FOR GIGS AND I DEVELOPED A FORMULA TO AUDITION WEEKLY NO MATTER WHAT I MAY HAVE BEEN INVOLVED WITH. LEBER-KREBS MANAGEMENT WAS MANAGING STU DAYE WHOM THEY THOUGHT HE WAS THE NEXT BOB DYLAN AND PLACED AN AD IN THE VILLAGE VOICE FOR A DRUMMER TO TOUR THE ALBUM. THE ALBUM WAS ON COLUMBIA RECORDS PRODUCED BY JACK DOUGLAS WITH DRUMS BY STEVE GADD AND BASS BY TONY LEVIN.
STU DAYE BAND-I AUDITIONED AT STU'S LIVING- LOFT AT 247 W. 30TH ST. HOME OF THE RAMONE'S,BRECKER BROS, BLONDIE, STEVE GADD AND LOTS OF OTHER UP-AND-COMING NEW YORK BANDS. BILLY SCHWARTZ (CROSS FROM SHA-NA-NA ) WAS CHOSEN AS THE GUITAR PLAYER AND MIKE NEVILLE PLAYED BASS. ALL OF US WERE SINGER-WRITERS IN OUR OWN RIGHT AND PROVIDED THE MUSIC AND VOCAL BACKGROUND TO TOUR THE ALBUM. DAVID KREBS BECAME MY MANAGER WHO LATER ASSISTED IN MY WORK WITH TED NUGENT. WE TOURED WITH FOGHAT, AEROSMITH , NUGENT, THIN LIZZY, JACKSON BROWNE AND OTHERS. WE WENT FROM A SACRIFICIAL LAMB-SOUND CHECK WARM-UP BAND TO GETTING THROWN OFF OF TOURS BECAUSE WE STARTED TO UPSTAGE THE HEADLINERS." ALBUM INFO HERE WITH A YOUTUBE OF THE BOXER:

THE FILE HERE IS FROM A BOARD MIX AT COBO HALL IN DETROIT, AS A WARM UP TO NUGENT. AFTER THE TOUR I HEADED DOWN TO FLORIDA WITH REX SMITH TO PUT TOGETHER A BAND CALLED THE FLYING TIGERS. -35 MINUTE LIVE SET AVAILABLESTEVE LIVE AT COBO HALL DETROIT 1979
THE FLYING TIGERS- I MET REX SMITH PLAYING THE CLUB CIRCUIT IN FLORIDA. OUR BANDS WERE IN COMPETITION WITH EACH OTHER. HE ARRIVED IN NEW YORK TO DEVELOP HIS OWN CAREER WHERE OUR PATHS CROSSED AND WE DECIDED TO JOIN FORCES. THE BAND STEAM FROM NEW YORK (NA-NA HEY-HEY GOODBYE) MOVED TO FORT MYERS FLORIDA TO OPEN UP A SHOWCASE ROCK CLUB. THEY OFFERED THEIR CLUB AND INVESTORS TO DEVELOP OUR NEW BAND THAT WE CALLED THE FLYING TIGERS. REX AND I DROVE DOWN TO FLORIDA STOPPING AT THE CLUBS AND VISITING GIRLS THAT WE HAD MET ON OUR PREVIOUS TOURS. I BROUGHT IN BASS PLAYER JAY DAVIS (ROD STEWART) WORKING WITH THE SOON TO BECOME FOREIGNER ON 57TH ST. I WAS REHEARSING WITH JAY AND FORIEGNER AT MEATLOAFS LOFT ON B'WAY AND 57TH ST IN NEW YORK AND CONVINCED HIM TO LEAVE THE PROJECT AND JOIN OUR BAND. (OUCH) JAY WAS WORKING WITH HIS BROTHER-IN-LAW, GUITARIST DANNY JOHNSON AND VINNY APPICE IN A BAND CALLED AXIS. WE PICKED UP A GUITARIST, FROM NEW YORK (MARK CUNNINGHAM) AND A MULTI-TALENTED CLASSIC ROCK KEYBOARD PLAYER DAVID EICHER FROM FLORIDA. HIS MOM PUT US UP FOR AWHILE WHILE WE RECORDED TWO SONGS IN FLORIDA AT CATAPULT STUDIO 8 TRACK FACILITY THAT ARE ATTACHED HERE AND LEFT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT BACK UP TO NEW YORK. LEBER- KREBS MANAGEMENT VIEWED REX AS THE STAR OF THE SHOW AND
ALLOWED HIM TO CHOOSE WHAT MUSICIANS TO HIRE FOR THE UPCOMING ALBUM. REX BROUGHT IN HIS OLD BANDMATES WHO HE LEFT FOR THE FLYING TIGERS. WE AND THE MEMBERS OF STEAM WERE LEFT HOLDING THE BAG WHICH IN RETROSPECT WAS THE BEST THING THAT COULD'VE HAPPENED. PLAYING IN A BAND CALLED REX SMITH WAS NOT MY INTENTIONS FOR NYC AND BEYOND.FLYING TIGERS IN FLA STUDIO-THEY CALL HER EASY LAY AWAY STAY AWAY
BILLY CROSS FROM STU DAYES BAND BEEN OFFERED ME A GIG PLAYING AT RENO SWEENEY'S AND TRAMPS (NYC CABARET CLUBS) WITH MEATLOAF, WHERE I MET RICK DERRINGER AND BAND (KENNY AARONSON AND DANNY JOHNSON, JAY DAVIS'S BROTHER IN LAW), BLONDIE, AND PRODUCERS,WRITERS AND ENGINEERS LOOKING FOR SESSION DRUMMERS.MIKE NEVILLE THE BASS PLAYER FROM STU'S BAND AND I FORMED A PROJECT CALLED ROCK CANDY TO TRY TO GET A RECORD DEAL BY WORKING OUR CONTACTS AT COLUMBIA. I WENT BACK TO MY FORMULA OF AUDITIONS WITHIN THE ADVERTISEMENTS FOUND IN THE VILLAGE VOICE WHICH OPENED UP A BRAND-NEW WORLD OF CONTACTS, OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES FOR ME IN NEW YORK.
ROCK CANDY- HERE ARE THREE TRACKS FROM THE PROJECT WITH MIKE NEVILLE WITH MY GOOD FRIEND AND LONGTIME BANDMATE IN VARIOUS PROJECTS, KINNY LANDRUM, ARGUABLY THE BEST MUSICIAN ON THE NYC SESSION SCENE.

REVOLVER-WE HAD IT ALL-SONGS, LABEL,PRODUCER,AGENT,TALENT,LOOKS,PUBLICIST AND DRIVE. WHY WE DIDN'T BREAKOUT OF THE NYC SCENE REMAINS A MYSTERY. I JOINED THE BAND AFTER THEY HAD MADE A SPLASH WITH A LOCAL HIT "MOMMA SAID" THAT APPEARED ON AN NBC COMPILATION RECORD. I ANSWERED THEIR CALL FOR DRUMS AND BROUGHT IN MY CONNECTIONS INCLUDING GIG CONTACTS ANDLEW FUTTERMAN-EPIC RECORDS WHO HAD BEEN MY MGR WITH TED NUGENT. MY WORK WITH
ART POLHEMUS (BLUES MAGOOS PRODUCER) CONNECTED US WITH HIS STUDIO, CO-ORDINATED SOUND ON 46TH ST IN NYC WHERE WE FINISHED 13 SONGS FOR RELEASE ON EPIC RECORDS THAT THEY SHELVED. WE BECAME A WELL-KNOWN NYC BAND AND EVENTUALLY TOURED THE MIDWEST BUT COULDN'T SCORE A DEAL. GREAT SONGS,FUN TIMES BUT I HAD THE CONTRACT TO TOUR NUGENTS FREE FOR ALL RECORD WHICH TOOK ME AWAY FROM REVOLVER. I LATER INVITED PHIL FEIT(BASSIST) TO JOIN ME IN THE BILLY IDOL PROJECT. I LEFT DAVID KREBS MGT (AEROSMITH) AND SIGNED WITH BILL AUCOIN (KISS-IDOL).

JERRY AND I HAD A MOST SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP AS TWO KIDS FROM THE MIDWEST TRYING TO MAKE IT IN THE BIG APPLE. WE REALLY SUPPORTED EACH OTHERS EFFORTS TO SURVIVE AND THRIVE IN NYC. JERRY IS ONE OF THE MOST TALENTED PEOPLE I KNOW. I RECALL OUR DAYS PLAYING CHESS IN CENTRAL PARK ( WHO CAN FORGET HIS DBL CHESS SETUP?), THE COLLINGWOOD HOTEL ANTICS AND OUR WORK ON RORY DEHOLOCAUST, A PROJECT AHEAD OF ITS TIME. WE HAD A MGR, LANNY LAMBERT,HOWARD BELDOCK (I BELIEVE HE MAY HAVE BEEN BOWIES LAWYER) AS OUR REPRESENTATIVE, A GREAT BAND AND A CONTRACT TO RECORD OUR ALBUM AT THE NYC HIT FACTORY. JERRY WROTE AND PRODUCED THE PROJECT THAT HAD ALL THE ELEMENTS FOR A MAJOR SUCCESS, INCLUDING MARKETING, SONGWRITING AND LONGEVITY. WE MAY HAVE BEEN OVERLY CAUTIOUS IN SECURING A DEAL AND THE PROJECT EVENTUALLY DIDN'T GET INTO DISTRIBUTION. JERRY BECAME AN INTEGRAL PART OF SHELTER STUDIOS, HELPING KEEP THINGS RUNNING ADDING HIS ARTISTIC AND BUSINESS SENSE. (THAT'S JERRY IN THE SPACESUIT ON THE COVER OF THE RHYTHM ALBUM TAKEN IN HIS ROOM AT THE COLLINGWOOD. ONE OF HIS SPECIALITIES IS MODEL BUILDING AND HE HAD HIS ROOM STACKED WITH THEM.) MANY OF THE PHOTOS ON THE SITE ARE FROM WORLD RENOWNED PHOTOGRAPHERS. BELOW IS A SHORT BIO FROM EACH ALONG WITH A LINK TO THEIR CURRENT WEB SITES.
Legendary rock photographer Mick Rock may be best known as The Man Who Shot the Seventies, for his iconic images of Syd Barrett, David Bowie, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Queen, the Sex Pistols, The Ramones, Blondie, Rocky Horror Picture Show etc. But he continues to shoot today and has produced many memorable images over the last decade of performers and artists such as Ceelo Green, Snoop Dogg, The Killers, Johnny Marr, Janelle Monaie, Jimmy Fallon, The Black Keys, The YeahYeahYeahs, Robin Thicke, Ellie Goulding, Kate Moss, Iggy Pop, Joan Jett, Alicia Keys, Michael Buble, Daft Punk, Perry Farrell, Motley Crue etc. He shot the photos for new album and single cover and press for outrageous Atlanta punk band The Black Lips.
Rock was instrumental in creating many key rock ’n’ roll images, such as album covers for Syd Barrett’s The Madcap Laughs, Lou Reed’s Transformer and Coney Island Baby, Iggy and the Stooges’ Raw Power, Queen’s Queen II (recreated for their classic music video ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’) and Sheer Heart Attack, the Ramones End of the Century and Joan Jett’s I Love Rock ’n’ Roll, among many others. He was the chief photographer on the films The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Shortbus. He also produced and directed the seminal music videos for Bowie to be found on Bowie’s Sound and Vision DVD collection: ‘John, I’m Only Dancing’, ‘Jean Genie’, ‘Space Oddity’, and ‘Life On Mars’.
In recent years he has published a series of books, mostly based on his classic images.

A documentary (untitled as yet, produced by Vice Films and StraightUp Films) about his extensive career is currently being edited by director Barney Clay. It is expected to be in circulation by September 2014
A European Internet campaign for the New Nikon Df digital camera, called ‘The Revisit’ centered around Mick and his work, including a new photo session, will be launched in April 2014.
Mick’s massive 2003 (186 prints) retrospective exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography was dubbed ‘one of the finest collections of pop art to ever reach these shores’ in the local press.
A classic quote from Mick in the London Times, who dubbed him ‘the music world’s top snapper’: ‘I’ve never felt like a voyeur, although I’ve certainly done plenty of looking! I work from the inside out. Like a cook I gather all the ingredients and keep mixing and stirring and tasting until this kind of effluvia starts to rise, then I’m off to the races. It’s an addictive kind of a feeling that I need a regular shot of otherwise I don’t feel right…’
Mick Rock’s Fall New York exhibition EXPOSED at Sumo Gallery showcases his iconic images of Syd Barrett, David Bowie, Lou Reed, Ramones, Iggy Pop, Queen, Blondie, Madonna, Ozzy Osbourne, Motley Crue and other rock legends. The exhibition includes never before seen images of the icons as well as his recent work of today’s musical glitterati including Pharrell Williams, Snoop Dogg, Karen O, Janelle Monáe, Daft Punk and John Cameron Mitchell as Hedwig. EXPOSED also features a selection of the PhotoArt that Rock has produced over the past 20 years but rarely exhibited, with interpretations inspired by his iconic photos of David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Lady Gaga, Bob Marley, Freddie Mercury, Lou Reed and Paul McCartney. From Andy Warhol to The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the exhibition is a visual celebration of the energy and unique style of the music that created the most exciting era in rock history. EXPOSED has received rave reviews from Vanity Fair, Style.com, Daily News, Village Voice, NY Post, NY Observer, W Magazine, Vice News and Paper Magazine among others. Due to popular demand, the exhibit’s run has been extended through November 13th.
Mick’s latest book EXPOSED, the inspiration for the exhibition, is available now from Palazzo Editions.
He has had major exhibitions in London, Liverpool, Berlin, Manchester, New York, Los Angeles, Oslo, Stockholm, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Tokyo, San Francisco, Las Vegas etc. His exhibition at the Fotografia Europea Exhibition in Reggio Emilia, Italy 2013 produced the biggest attendance of any exhibition in their history. The first exhibition of his photo artwork was presented at CATM Gallery in New York in 2012. His next major photographic exhibition will be in Sao Paolo from March 20 to April 20. He will have exhibits in London, New York, San Francisco and LA in the autumn of 2014.
Pop-inspired visual puns; contemporary fairy tales of half-human, half-bunny creatures; wide-angled dog noses; foreshortened fisheye caricatures; vividly-colored light painting; post-apocalyptic landscapes; madcap creativity.
An influential oddity, the dog guy, unconventional, surreal, comedic, ironic, satiric, a great cook.
These have all been words to try to put a label on Chip Simon’s photography and himself. His unique style has ricocheted through magazines, advertising, books, television, film, art galleries and permanent collections.
Chip Simons was born in Ohio in 1958. He first became interested in photography with super 8 movies when he was seven. He took a newspaper production class in high school in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and had his first photo published. He rode his bicycle all over the Gettysburg battlefields shooting sunsets, fog, hay bales and cobwebs. His camera became how he had fun, escaped, used his brain and his eyes. Following studies in art and photography at Kutztown University, he moved to Albuquerque to attend the University of New Mexico where he received his undergraduate degree.
After college, Chip moved to New York City to pursue commercial and personal projects. His first major series of work, "I Am A Dog", was then published in Andy Warhol's Interview Magazine. Chip’s unique style propelled him to the front of his field. His use of vivid color, wide-angle lenses and innovative lighting techniques coupled to form a signature style. He left New York to go back to New Mexico to raise a family and live on his dream farm where he continued to produce a huge body of work. More recently he has moved around the country.
Ebet Roberts moved from her native Memphis to New York City to paint but switched to photography in 1977 when she began began documenting the evolving CBGB scene. Since then she has consistently documented musicians. Capturing the essence of the artists she photographs, while accumulating a vast archive and respect from her peers.
Her work has been syndicated and exhibited worldwide and is included in MTV-VH1 television specials, music anthologies, posters, advertisements, galleries, and private collections, as well as permanent collections for such rock, jazz, and classical musicians as: Bob Marley, Neil Young, Ravi Shankar, Phillip Glass, Bob Dylan, R.E.M., The Ramones, The Cure, The Pretenders, Robert Plant, Bruce Springsteen, Miles Davis, Talking Heads, The Clash and Bon Jovi.
Her photographs are reproduced in innumerable publications including Rolling Stone, MOJO, Spin, GQ, Playboy, The New York Times, Newsweek, Time, People, USA Today, and The Village Voice. They are also featured prominently in "Blank Generation Revisited", "This Ain’t No Disco: The Story of CBGB" and "Frozen Fire: The Story of the Cars", "CBGB'S: 30 Years of Photographs", "Punk 365", "Farm Aid: A Song for America" and "The Rolling Stone Book of Women in Rock", and have been included in "Rock Stars" by Timothy White, "Written in My Soul" by Bill Flanagan, "The Rolling Stone Illustrated History of Rock'N Roll" by Anthony deCurtis and James Henke, "Empty Places" by Laurie Anderson, "Rock and Roll at 50" by Life Books, and "Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History 1955-Present" by Gail Buckland. Her photographs are also in the permanent collection of The Rock And Roll Hall of Fame, Seattle’s Experience Music Project, The Grammy Museum, and The Hard Rock Cafe.
