From one perspective, a journey of discovery could be viewed as a path from Full-Mindedness (that is, a lot of facts, knowledge and insights) to Mind-Fullness (that is, simplification due to abstraction, and wisdom due to grasping of principles and depth). And that the 'traveler' would be somewhere along the path, either close to one point or the other.
But from a different perspective, this journey could be viewed more "inclusively": not as an either-or, but rather as a this-and-that 1. That is, one has the ability to be both full-minded and mindful.
And that more knowledge (full-mind) will lead to (thanks to mindfulness) deeper insights and abstraction of the essence, which will create more and higher-level knowledge. In other words an on-going spiral.
And this is the beauty and indication of expertise/mastery and wisdom.
A graphic illustration of spiraling improvement and development (and "bootstrapping") is M.C. Escher's etching of one hand drawing another (which in turn draws and refines the first one, ...).So, here's to a spiraling journey of discovery and learning. It is exciting and fun, or as Isaac Asimov put it nicely: The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds new discoveries, is not "Eureka!", but "That's funny...".
1 On Inclusion and "or vs. and": Given a glass with water up to the mid level, it is said that 'People from the West' will either say it's half full or they'll say it's half empty. It is also said that 'People from the East' will say it's both half full and half empty 2. They are all right ;-)
2 and an engineer would probably say that the glass is twice as large as had been specified in the original requirements...
