Beyond the Aquarium, the Monterey Peninsula provides you unparalleled nature, including hikes, whale watching, close-up access to local wildlife (otters, sea lions, harbor seals, dolphins, pelicans, etc.), wine tasting, and some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. Located along world-famous Highway 1 that hugs the coast, you can spend days here and still not see it all. Here are some of our favorite things to do in the area.
Widely recognized as one of the most scenic drives in the world, this famous coastal landmark runs from Pacific Grove to Pebble Beach, featuring awe-inspiring vistas and legendary sites perfect for a day of exploration. Marvel at some of nature’s treasures including The Lone Cypress, Spanish Bay and Stillwater Cove, as well as the world-renowned Pebble Beach Golf Links.
Point Lobos has been called "the greatest meeting of land and sea in the world" and "the crown jewel of the state park system." It has diving unmatched on the California coast, great hiking, perfect picnic spots, vistas and wildlife well-suited for painting or photography, and even an old whaler's cabin. In the winter, migrating gray whales are visible from the shore.
Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park (Big Sur):
This is a very easy hike at just under a mile. From the parking lot, follow the shady Waterfall Trail along McWay Creek and through a tunnel under Highway One. Stepping through the tunnel is like going through a portal to a different world. The sun is bright and glints off the ocean. From the overlook you can see the beautiful McWay Falls tumble down to McWay Cove. Head to your right to follow along the coastline. See the Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park online trail map at the California State Parks website for more information.
For other hikes in Big Sur (about 30-40 minutes south of Monterey): http://www.hikinginbigsur.com/Monarch Grove Butterfly Reserve:Every October, thousands of butterflies make a stop in a Pacific Grove eucalyptus grove, the preferred Monarch butterfly habitat, during their migration to warmer climates. The butterflies hang in clusters from eucalyptus branches to maintain body temperature, and the resulting effect is stunning. Visitors come from miles around to take Monarch butterfly tours throughout the sanctuary.
