Mario is PhD in Applied Economics (University of Vigo, 2006). Mario has been at the National Institute for Agriculture and Food Research and Technology (INIA) since 2009, where he is currently Tenured Scientist at the Forest Research Centre (CIFOR). His research areas fall within the field of environmental economics: environmental valuation and sustainable management of natural resources (with special mention to forestry). His work has been presented at several conferences on Environmental Economics, Agricultural Economics, Economic Policy, Energy and Forestry. He is author of several publications in peer-reviewed journals (Land Economics, Ecological Economics, Regional Studies, Journal of Forest Economics, Agricultural Economics, Applied Economics Letters, Land Use Policy, Energy Policy, Environmetrics, PLoS ONE, etc.); and regularly acts as reviewer for international scientific journals. He has participated in several research projects funded by the European Commission, the Spanish Ministry as well as by private companies, and leads fundamental research in environmental valuation. In July 2012 he joined as a permanent researcher at the 'Sustainable Forest Management Research Institute' (iuFOR - University of Valladolid & INIA). In 2016, Mario has been appointed as associate editor of Forest Systems.
