Mario is PhD in Applied Economics (University of Vigo, 2006) and since 2019 holds a permanent position as Associate Professor in the Department of Economic Analysis at the Complutense University of Madrid. Previously, he was a tenured Scientist at the National Institute for Agriculture and Food Research and Technology (2009-2019; currently on leave). His research areas fall within the field of environmental economics: environmental valuation and sustainable management of natural resources. His research has been applied to multiple environmental issues, such as energy, water, pollution, forestry, rural development, biodiversity, etc. His work has been presented at several conferences on Environmental Economics, Agricultural Economics, Economic Policy, Energy and Forestry. He is author of several publications (h-index=16 based on Scopus), counting more than 50 papers in JCR journals included in the Social Sciences Citation Index (Land Economics, Ecological Economics, Energy Economics, Regional Studies, Forest Policy and Economics, Journal of Forest Economics, Agricultural Economics, Journal of Behavioral and Experimental Economics, Applied Economics Letters, Energy Policy, etc.) and the Science Citation Index (PLoS ONE, Science of the Total Environment, Landscape and Urban Planning, Conservation Biology, Biological Conservation, Forest Ecology and Management, Diversity and Distributions, etc.). He regularly acts as reviewer for international scientific journals and is Associate Editor of ‘Forest Systems’. He has participated in several research projects funded by the European Commission, the Spanish Ministry as well as by private companies, and leads fundamental research in environmental valuation.
