Profile

Mario is PhD in Applied Economics (University of Vigo, 2006) and holds a permanent position as Tenured Scientist in the Institute of Marine Research at the CSIC. Previously he was researcher at the University of Vigo and the Spanish National Institute for Technology and Agricultural Research, and associate professor at the Complutense University of Madrid (currently on leave). His research areas fall within the field of environmental economics: environmental valuation and sustainable management of natural resources. His research has been applied to multiple environmental issues, such as energy, water, pollution, forestry, rural development, biodiversity, etc. Currently, his research focuses on the economic valuation of ecosystem services in coastal and marine ecosystems, and how the psychological, institutional, socioeconomic and home-site factors influence the behavior of people. His work has been presented at several conferences on Environmental Economics, Agricultural Economics, Economic Policy, Energy and Forestry, and he has been invited to lecture at the University of Murcia, University of Seville, International University Menéndez Pelayo, among others. He is author of several publications (h-index=19 based on Scopus), counting more than 60 papers in JCR journals included in the Social Sciences Citation Index (Land Economics, Ecological Economics, Energy Economics, World Development, Regional Studies, Journal of Forest Economics, Forest Policy and Economics, Agricultural Economics, Journal of Behavioral and Experimental Economics, Applied Economics Letters, etc.) and the Science Citation Index (PLoS ONE, Science of the Total Environment, Biological Conservation, Landscape and Urban Planning, Forest Ecology and Management, Diversity and Distributions, etc.). He regularly acts as reviewer for international scientific journals and is Associate Editor of ‘Sustainability’ and ‘Revista Galega de Economía’. He has participated in several research projects funded by the European Commission, the Spanish Ministry as well as by private companies, and leads fundamental research in environmental valuation.
