How it all started:
Something is to be said about watching your first independent film. If you have a desire to be a film maker, you wonder what kind of obstacles they (the director) had to endure and what lengths did they go to to realize their dream. You ask yourself so many questions like "was their final product exactly what they envisioned?" But I will never forget my first independent film. I was ten years old and my father wanted me to learn the heart and soul of surfing, so he rented Bruce Brown's Endless Summer I. I sat in amazement that these three guys get to travel the world, surf, and film their endeavor. That simple film did more than just plant a seed in my mind.
Flash forward to 1999 and you will find me a young 19 year old man tinkering with computers, my first two to be exact. I wondered if it was possible to use the newer digital camcorders with my then almost cutting edge PC's. The end result, was a sloppy analog to digital conversion as I couldn't afford a digital camcorder and was forced to use my father's now outdated camcorder. But it got the job done. After one failed attempt at a 9 1/2 hour render of only 22 minutes of film, I made my first movie. Would you guess that it was a cheesy surf flick? Now being able to produce my own film with the help of my second desktop and the mighty Pentium 3 processor at a whopping 733 mHz, I felt confident to tackle something bigger. But I knew I had met the limitations of the existing technology in my developing studio.
Now flash forward to 2002 and the computers in my ensemble are able to render film at a much faster rate and to hone my skills I solicit my services to create wedding packages. As time progressed my skills grew but so did my technology base. To reach a wider audience I launched (now defunct) www.millerdesignstudios.com.
In 2003 I attended my first Digital Video Expo to see what the industry was using. I was blown away and felt quite humbled to be around so much technology and expertise. I knew then that what ever I had spent in the past was not going to compare to what I would in the future.
By 2004 my skills were such that I no longer would offer my services to edit wedding video footage. I decided that I would not edit any more films for money or free that did not deal with my own vision of film making.
However in early 2005 I decided to make one last wedding video for a close friend, and decided to start my first film. With only my notebook, which by the way was light years faster than my first desktop, I wrote the concept for Starting Over. Being that 2004 was one of the hardest years of my life, I wanted to make sure that 2005 would stand out as a turning point for my life.
I found that in order to go ahead with your dreams sometimes you have to give up the very things you hold dear. Even if they are the very things that will take you to your dreams. In my case, in order to create capital to begin work on Starting Over, I needed to sell every computer and spare computer storage device I had. I felt like I was scraping the barrel at times and barely made ends meet.
But at the end of 2005 I had accomplished a large milestone. Being that the main character of Starting Over is actually a car, its engine was in dire straights and in need of serious rebuilding. At the end of 2005 the engine had been not only rebuilt but many other items on the car that were neglected were made better than new. In the meanwhile, hundreds of photos were taken of the restoration process. At the time it was mostly for archival purposes and sentimental value, but later after looking back at the road of life traveled, those pictures started to tell a story. The story of what it looks like when you are starting over.
In the same year as rebuilding the engine, I launched the new www.freeagentfilms.com site. I chose a new name for a company I would head because I wanted a name that conveyed a sense of strong independence. The name was widely accepted and a web presence that would host media and videos by invitation only was created.
Now in 2012, the long road I have traveled is coming to fruition. The testing phase of the car is over and I can begin to sit down and diagram what will be unfolded first, the ball is moving faster to a film date. Being that for the most part it's been a one man show for producing, the ball seemed like it hasn't moved fast enough or appeared to stand still. However I am proud to say that filming will commence in mid 2013. I have acquired the help of a few friends and family that are starting the see the same dream and vision I have. In the end that is what we all want to accomplish as film makers, the ability to have the audience see our dream. Please stay tuned to see what will be turned out.
