I received a Bachelor's degree from University of Seoul and my Master's and Doctoral degrees from Penn State University, all in Environmental Engineering. My bachelor thesis was about an air curtain and its modeling for subway tunnels, and my data were used for policymaking in Seoul City. For my graduate studies, I investigated microbiology and electrochemistry in microbial electrochemical systems. After that, I worked as a senior consultant in Samsung SDS for solving environmental and energy problems in the Samsung Group. Then, I studied natural and constructed wetlands in Ecological Engineering Lab. In 2014, I became a tenure-track faculty member at Chonnam National University, Gwangju, and I started Environmental Fusion Energy Technology Lab. 

We develop microbial electrochemical systems, novel water-energy nexus environmental systems. And we investigate their underlying science for cutting-edge engineering. Our research subjects are as below: 

• Bioelectrochemical wastewater treatment technology 

• Bioelectrochemical wetland remediation technology

• Ultimate green hydrogen production technology
