Smart Appliances Project
TNO performed a study (January 2014 - March 2015) for the European Commission to bring together semantics and data from smart appliances in buildings and households. These smart appliances all communicate in a different manner and the information they exchange differs. TNO brought the information together in the Smart Appliances reference ontology (SAREF) that can be used to match the data from different organizations. SAREF fits into the ETSI M2M architecture.
ETSI, the European Telecommunications Standard Institute, standardized the machine-to-machine (M2M) architecture. This architecture describes in which way and how machines interact with one another.
On this website you can read about the approach and results of the smart appliances project. The project started with taking stock of existing semantic assets and use case assets. This work was presented at the workshop on ‘Smart Appliances common data model & ontology’ co-organised by EC DG-CONNECT and ETSI end of May 2014; the final version of the associated Report (First Interim study report ) was published in June 2014.
In the second phase of the project we performed a translation exercise of each model (or use case) to a common ontology language (OWL) and a mapping exercise between all the models. We did this work in an iterative approach, constantly updating the common ontology based on the models being translated. This work was presented at the 2nd DG CONNECT & ETSI Workshop on Smart Appliances on October 14, 2014; the final version of the associated Report (Second Interim study report ) was published in October 2014.
In the third phase TNO proposed a common ontology and document the ontology into the ETSI M2M architecture. This work was presented at the 3rd DG CONNECT & ETSI Workshop on Smart Appliances on February 10, 2015 in Brussels. The final version of the associated Report (Third Interim study report ) was published in February 2015.
The project finished with a final workshop on the 1st of April 2015 in Brussels in which the updates made for the associate Report (Final Study report) were presented. The final version of Smart Appliances Reference ontology (SAREF) that was created in during the project is available at: http://ontology.tno.nl/saref.ttl and the documentation on: http://ontology.tno.nl/saref
The ontology created during the project has been standardized by ETSI, the European Telecommunications Standards Institute. The technical specification has been published in November 2015 and can be found at: ETSI TS 103 264 v1.1.1.
