The Skoura Varvitsa Brotherhood USA was formed in 1907, and is considered one of the oldest Greek-American organizations in the US. It is filled with a rich history and glorious past in part because our parents and grandparents worked hard for the success of the Brotherhood. Our roots are from the same villages, Skoura and Varvitsa, (located in the prefecture of Laconia in the Peloponnese) which is also filled with a glorious past and history. Great heroes such as Kapetan Zaharias Barbitsiotis & Petros Anagnostopoulos Barbitsiotis came from the village of Varvitsa and played a major role in Modern Greek history.
The Skoura Varvitsa Brotherhood has played a significant role in communities through out the US & Greece. Over the years, the Brotherhood has contributed to churches, schools, hospitals and nursing homes. It has organized (along with other Greek-American organizations) the Greek Independence Day parade in NY. In the 1940’s, the Brotherhood helped out in the war effort both here in the US & in Greece with financial contributions. During the Cyprus crisis in 1974, it took the initiative and adopted 12 Greek-Cyprian children who were orphans and helped them out financially. In recent years, one of the many charities that the Brotherhood has been proud to contribute is to the Greek Children’s Fund
