Ultima, or Baroque Chess, is a chess variant invented in 1962 by Robert Abbot. Whereas in chess, all captures are made by replacement (taking the victim's square), in Ultima each piece has a distinct method of capture - such as jumping, pinching, withdrawing, immobilization or chameleon.
