Learning Objective

Students will investigate area, perimeter, volume and cost of an open topped rectangular prism.

First model

I created a wood frame using a 4x8 sheet of plywood as the base. Note that you need to extrude the rectangle up half and inch because that is the depth of plywood. The wood color in this model is Plywood Knots.

Then, I used the follow me tool set at 1.5 inches to create a frame for the sides (see above). The size of a regular 2x4 is actually 1.5" x 3.5". Once the edge is created, I "pulled" the frame up about 2.5 feet. The outside faces are covered with Square Glass Tile 02. However, I did not account for the thickness of a piece of tile. The last step involved creating a surface about half way up the interior of the prism. This surface was colored Water Light Blue (not shown).

Second Model

In the second model, I used 2x8s for the sides. The actual dimensions for a 2x8 are 1.5” x 7.25”.

Since I used 3 pieces of wood, the height is 3"x7.25" = 21.75". My model used overlapping boards as shown in the image.

The last step involved creating a surface inside the prism and coloring it with a water color. I changed the default style to X-ray view to draw in the segments. The water line is half way up the side of the pond.

Research on plywood

Plywood is a material manufactured from thin layers, or piles, of wood veneer that are glued together with adjacent layers rotated 90 degrees to one another. Smaller, thinner, and lower-quality plywoods may only have their plies (layers) arranged at right angles to each other. Some better-quality plywood products will by design have five plies in steps of 45 degrees (0, 45, 90, 135, and 180 degrees), giving strength in multiple axes.

Research on 2x4s

A 2x4 is actually 1.5” x 3.5”

A 2x6 is actually 1.5"x 5.5"

A 2x8 is actually 1.5” x 7.25”
