Call for papers

Osnabrück University's Institute of Cognitive Science and Institute of Philosophy are pleased to announce the 24th Sinn und Bedeutung (SuB24) conference, taking place on September 4-7, 2019.

We invite abstract submissions for oral or poster presentations on topics pertaining to natural language semantics, pragmatics, the syntax-semantics interface, psycho- and neurolinguistics of meaning, and the philosophy of language.

The conference will feature a special session on Neurolinguistic Approaches to Semantics and Pragmatics: In the past decades, on the one hand, researchers have been collecting brain imaging data for the testing of hypotheses from theoretical linguistics, with for example, N400 or P600 ERP (event-related potential) components as indexes of different (i.e. syntactic, semantic, discourse) integration costs. On the other hand, there has been skepticism as to whether it is possible to confirm or falsify traditional linguistic theories using brain imaging data. In addition to 2 invited talks, we plan on accepting 4 submitted papers on the topic and will host a round table on related open questions.

Abstracts should contain original research that, at the time of submission, has neither been published nor accepted for publication. One person can submit at most one abstract as sole author and one abstract as co-author (or two co-authored abstracts), for the main session and special session combined. Submissions on the topic of the special session will be considered for the main session as well. Authors will be asked to specify at the time of submission their preference for their abstract to be considered for a talk (35+10 minutes) and/or a poster.

Abstracts should be anonymous and must not exceed two pages (letter size or A4 paper, 2.5cm or 1 inch margins on all sides, 12 point font), including examples and references. Abstracts must be submitted electronically in PDF format via EasyChair by March 10, 2019 (23:59 Central European Standard Time) :
