I spent hours looking for a good Windows video processor to prepare videos for YouTube - that is, an application which will encode/transcode video from one format to another while doing basic tasks such as cropping, resizing and cutting out unnecessary footage. This should be easy. But in my search, nothing has quite satisfied...
Here's what I've found so far... (Last Updated 11 Feb 2011)
AviDemux

This has the most promise. Support for a wide variety of formats and some great settings and filters similar to VirtualDubMod, BUT... even after several years of development I find it crashes on me frequently and presents strange error messages that are difficult to remedy. Oh how I wish this app worked reliably!
AviSynth
A powerful script-based video processing engine. Has some great features but it has a huge learning curve as everything is typed in as text commands. Doing simple crops, resizing and cutting takes a lot of messing around. Add to the fact that many modern video formats require indexing (see DGIndex) before AviSynth will read them correctly.
VirtualDubMod
Once upon a time this was THE tool of choice for processing video. Has lots of filters to choose from, is relatively simple to use, supports various types of video proxying and AVS scripts, does batch processing, BUT...
Microsoft Expression Encoder
I'd sad to admit this, but this was the only tool that did what I wanted - a simple video crop, extraneous footage chopped, and converted into another high-quality video format with minimal fuss. Couldn't find a way to do colour corrections/filters though. :-(

Don't think a version has been released since 2005.
