Introduction

Simon Clark: Earth and Materials Scientist.

Inspiring people to become leaders and innovators in STEM through exciting mentored project-based learning.

Simon Clark teaching in Central South University, Changsha, China. Jan 2019.

I am a Professor in the School of Engineering, Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia. I develop novel instrumentation and methodologies, usually using synchrotron radiation and neutron imaging and scattering, for the characterization of complex multiphase systems. Current projects include developing sustainable concrete infrastructure, structural characterization of amorphous and semi-amorphous materials, and engineering biomimetic systems.

Major questions being addressed:

  • How do we protect vital concrete infrastructure from concrete corrosion?

  • How do we turn yesterday's waste streams into tomorrow's raw material?

  • What is the role of water in the conductivity of the Earth's Mantle?

  • What is the origin of the anisotropy of the Earth's core?

  • What controls the biogenic emplacement of limestones?

  • How do fluids percolate through aggregates?
