My current field project is at the southernmost point of Cyprus. Since 2015 my University of Leicester team has been collaborating with colleagues from the Universities of Southampton and Cypus to investigate the Roman and Byzantine port at Dreamers Bay, Akrotiri. Working inside RAF Akrotiri air base, we have been exploring the port and its maritime environment, and collaborating with UK Ministry of Defence and Cypriot stakeholders to help protect and promote the archaeological heritage of the peninsula.
Maritime archaeology is something entirely new to us coming from landlocked Leicester, and it has been a real privilege to work with, and learn from, our underwater archaeology colleagues, while we have been working on the shoreline remains.
The Dreamer's Bay work has developed into a study of the mostly Greek, Roman and Byzantine archaeology of the peninsula as a whole, involving as far as we can the communities of both the RAF base and the local village. We hope to develop a successful schools and outreach programme into a public archaeology project.
