Silverthorn Malinois

Breeding Philosophy and Litter Plans

A little about my ideas on breeding

I didn’t set out to be a breeder. I was looking for my next “competition” dog for obedience and agility. After much research, I decided on getting a Belgian Malinois. Over the past several years I have fallen even more in love with the breed as I have lived with my three and met many others. My dogs are first and foremost my companions in life, and then partners in competition. They live in the house with me and I couldn’t have it any other way.

As a “performance” person at my core, structure and temperament are key to having a dog with the longevity and attitude that will lead to a long healthy life, whether they are working or playing, and that their owner will enjoy. Although breed type is important, and pretty is always a plus, I will not sacrifice structure or temperament for “just” good looks. I believe that the Malinois is a versatile breed that can work and look good while doing it. I am not breeding for purely working sports or purely show. If that is what you are looking for there are other breeders that may be producing something more suitable to your needs and desires in a puppy.

Is a Malinois the right dog for you and your family?

The Belgian Malinois is a very active breed that needs mental and physical stimulation. As herding dogs, they tend to enjoy chasing moving objects. At times they can easily train their humans. This is an intelligent, thinking breed which can make training either extremely fun or extremely challenging. My dogs have learned behaviors quickly, but if I made a mistake in training is was very hard to change or correct that behavior.

Before puppies go home

Litters will be evaluated for structure and temperament about 7-8 weeks old prior to puppies being matched with potential homes. Pups will also have dew claws removed, have their first set of vaccinations, eye exam, and microchip.

Prospective homes will be screened and will need to complete a buyer’s questionnaire. In order to best match puppies with their homes, please be realistic when answering the questionnaire. All puppies are sold with a written agreement that you may review in advance. Even though a potential home may be on the waiting list with a deposit, I cannot guarantee there will be a puppy that will match the desired qualities. If this happens, any deposit paid will be refunded. I will not push anyone to buy a puppy because my biggest desire is that owner and dog will enjoy the next 14 years together.
