The PUNE-LIBRARY NETWORKING PROJECT (http://bioinfo.ernet.in/punenet) was a joint program between the University of Pune, Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) and National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), financially supported by Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), New Delhi. One of the basic aims of this project was to interconnect all the libraries in the city of Pune, and facilitate active information interchange. I worked in various capacities during the development of PuneNet projects and contributed data collection, testing, metadata, etc.
Directory of Scientific Data Banks in Science and Technology in India
For partial fulfillment of my master's in Library and Information Science, I designed and developed a computerized Directory of Scientific Data Banks in Science and Technology which was the outcome of the survey of various organizations in India. The database was designed using CDS / ISIS (UNESCO Library Software). This directory was in the same format as that of "Data Sources in Asian-Oceanic countries" a directory of the Committee on Data for Science and Technology- CODATA 1990. The information of about182 data banks created by 129 organizations is available in this directory. The data banks cover various subject areas including Indian ancient sciences like Ayurveda and Yoga. Data Banks available in other forms (printed, file form, etc.) were also included. These data banks are of various types -viz. numeric, factual, alphanumeric, etc.
Biotechnology Directory
Research Profile of Biotechnology Activities in India: A Project funded by Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. The Biotechnology Directory contains information about the biotechnology institutes. This database contains details of institutes with specialized research areas, ongoing and completed projects, experts working in the institutes and Biotechnology equipment etc. A list of publications of each institute was also included. The online version of this directory was hosted on the server of the Bioinformatics Centre, University of Pune. I was involved in data collection and updating activities in this project.
Ph.D.research
2001-2006
Ph.D. thesis - “Organisation of information for the World Wide Web: A case study of Indian Fungi" under the guidance Prof. Harsha Parekh, retried librarian and HOD, S.H.P.T. School of Library Science, S.N.D.T. University, Mumbai. A prototype of database - Fungal Species Information System was developed and the core contribution was collection and organisation fields of online database considering multidisciplinary users. The objectives were to assess the information needs of different groups of users (mycologists, plant pathologists, biotechnologists, farmers, etc.) involved in the study of fungal species and to understand the differences in the information requirements based on their activities and to create and test a database prototype for mycologists and other users, which would satisfy the needs of different user groups and which could be collaboratively developed into a comprehensive information resource on the web.
