I decided to go see the memorial myself, riding my venerable 39 year old BMW R80G/S on the dirt roads leading to the site. A large boulder with inscriptions memorialises the 4 men who died that night. I was moved. Very moved. As an ex-conscript Army Infantry Officer, I was sad to read the deaths were 3 Privates and 1 Sergeant. The inscription describes not just the profound loss of the men but also acknowledges the appreciation that Americans have for Australians, especially the 4 men.
Dying for one’s country especially in uniform may just about be the ultimate sacrifice and display of patriotism - more so when it involves saving the lives of our ally during the Second World War. I got back on my R80G/S fired up the engine and randomly selected a podcast on my Sena helmet headset. Surprisingly the 1914Christmas Day Truce at Somme came on.
I was taken aback by the coincidence.
My BMW has taken me to many superb and beautiful places but never to a place and time that so personified the Australian Digger Spirit and so close to home.
SGT Allan, Pte Pitt, Pte Snell and Pte Simmons, collectively, you really are, “A Few Good Men" – Thank you for your selfless service.
