Title: 16:750:305 Modern Optics
Prerequisites: Intro E&M (01:750:227-228 or 01:750:272-273) and 01:640:251 (Calc3, Multi-variable). It is assumed that students have had at least one year of college physics, such as Analytical Physics 227/ 271/ 272. Students should be familiar with Newton's Laws, electric and magnetic fields and Maxwell’s equations (at least in integral form), elementary quantum mechanics and atomic structure, and the properties of a harmonic oscillator.
Instructor: Shaowen Chen (shaowen.chen@rutgers.edu)
Topics: Geometrical optics; electromagnetic waves, the wave equation; superposition, interference, diffraction, polarization, coherence; Fresnel equations, multilayer films; blackbody radiation, lasers; holography; waveguides and fiber optics; optical properties of materials.
